Yogi Adityanath launches a major Diwali initiative under Ujjwala Yojana, offering two free LPG refills to 1.86 crore women in Uttar Pradesh. Scheme to benefit rural households in two phases.
In a major pre-Diwali announcement aimed at empowering women and supporting rural households, the Yogi Adityanath-led Uttar Pradesh government has launched an ambitious initiative to provide two free LPG refills to over 1.86 crore women beneficiaries under the Pradhan Mantri Ujjwala Yojana (PMUY).
The announcement will be formally made by Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath at Lok Bhavan on Wednesday, marking the launch of one of the biggest LPG subsidy distributions in the country.
Ujjwala Yojana: A Lifeline for Rural Women
Originally launched in 2016, the Pradhan Mantri Ujjwala Yojana is a flagship central government scheme aimed at providing clean cooking fuel to economically weaker and rural households. Uttar Pradesh leads the country in its implementation, with over 1.86 crore LPG connections already distributed to women from Below Poverty Line (BPL) families.
Under this latest initiative, beneficiaries will receive two free LPG refills in two phases:
-
Phase 1: October to December 2025
-
Phase 2: January to March 2026
₹1,500 Crore Allocated for the Scheme
The Uttar Pradesh government has allocated ₹1,500 crore for this program. Already, ₹346.34 crore has been advanced to oil marketing companies — Indian Oil, Bharat Petroleum, and Hindustan Petroleum — to ensure a smooth and uninterrupted supply chain.
How Beneficiaries Will Receive the Benefit
The scheme is Aadhaar-linked to ensure transparency and proper targeting. In the first phase, around 1.23 crore Aadhaar-verified women will benefit.

Here’s how it works:
-
Purchase First: Beneficiaries will buy the refill at the current market price.
-
Get Reimbursed: Within 3 to 4 days, the subsidy amount will be credited to their Aadhaar-linked bank accounts.
The scheme covers:
-
Women using 14.2 kg and 5 kg LPG cylinders
-
Single-connection households
-
Those undergoing Aadhaar verification
Technology-Driven Implementation
To ensure transparency and ease of access:
-
SMS alerts and a dedicated mobile app will keep users updated.
-
Additional manpower and laptops are being deployed at distribution centers.
-
Awareness campaigns, including banners and village camps, are ongoing statewide.
Monitoring committees at both state and district levels will oversee operations. A grievance redressal mechanism will handle consumer complaints, and the Weights and Measures Department will conduct random checks to ensure proper cylinder weight.
A Festival Gift That Empowers
This initiative comes just ahead of Diwali, offering both economic relief and health benefits by promoting clean fuel use. It’s not just about free gas—it’s about empowering women, boosting household welfare, and continuing the shift to cleaner energy sources.
With this step, the Yogi government reinforces its commitment to social welfare, women empowerment, and rural development, making the festive season brighter for millions of families in Uttar Pradesh.
