R Madhavan on Onscreen Chemistry: ‘Important to Fall in Love with My Heroine’

Actor R Madhavan, celebrated for his charming romantic roles in films like Alaipayuthey and Aap Jaisa Koi, recently shared insights into the crucial role chemistry plays in his performances. In a candid interview with Filmfare, Madhavan revealed that the real test of a romantic film begins the moment he meets his co-star.

“When you do a romantic film, one of the moments of truth for me is when I meet my co-star,” Madhavan said. “You’re hoping and praying that you don’t have to work too much, because chemistry is something you can’t explain. It’s a chemical reaction.”

Recalling his first encounter with actress Fatima Sana Shaikh for their Aap Jaisa Koi film, R Madhavan described the moment as both intimate and natural. “It was a small, cosy room in the Dharma office. We were sitting at a distance, and during the narration, she quietly shuffled over to my side, sat next to me, and just started talking. The comfort level was amazing — unspoken, natural. You can’t write that into a script.”

For Madhavan, developing genuine feelings for his heroine is essential to create convincing chemistry on screen. “For me, it is very important to fall in love with my heroine to be able to give that chemistry. I think the highest form of love is respect; if that’s not there, to kuch bhi nai rahega (then nothing will be there). And that was instinctive for me when I met her.”

Madhavan’s reflections underscore the subtle, intangible factors that bring romantic films to life, highlighting that beyond scripted dialogues and rehearsals, authentic emotional connection remains key to memorable performances.
