Musheer Khan overtook Sachin Tendulkar to become the youngest Mumbai batsman to score a century off 255 balls in the Ranji Trophy final against Vidarbha at the Wankhede Stadium on Tuesday.

Leading by 119 runs in the first innings, Mumbai decided to bat again on the second day. Openers Prithvi Shaw and Bhupan Lelwani started early while captain Musheer and Ajinkya Rahane defied the hesitancy of the top order. With each scoring a half-century, the evening’s score rose to 141 between them.

When play resumed on the third day, No.3 Mushir continued to run alongside Shreyas Iyer even after Rahane was dismissed for 73. In the 90th over, Musheer scored his second first-class century in three games.

Musheer, the younger brother of Indian batsman Sarfaraz Khan, made his maiden first-class century a double century in the quarter-final against Baroda. He is the second young batsman from Mumbai after Wasim Jaffer to achieve this milestone.

At 19 years and 14 days, Musheer became the youngest Mumbai batsman to score 100 runs in a Ranji final, surpassing Tendulkar’s record. Tendulkar led the club to another title in the 1994-95 season finale against Punjab and reached 200 a month before his 22nd birthday. Incidentally, Tendulkar was watching Vankhede’s game from the stands that day.

Mumbai have won the record 41 times in 47 Ranji Trophy finals and are on the verge of lifting it again in their 48th final. On the other hand, Vidarbha will be playing in the Ranji final for the third time after winning two consecutive tournaments from 2017 to 2019.
