Zayn Malik ushered in a new era by announcing his fourth studio album, Room Under the Stairs, on Instagram. The album cover shows a silhouette of his face next to a drawing of a house under construction.

The album is scheduled to be released on May 17 via Mercury Records and marks Malik’s first debut with the label, alongside artists such as Noah Kahan, Post Malone and Lily Rose. The singer will give fans a taste of the album with the single “What I Am”, which will be released on Friday, March 15.

Last week, Malik told fans about the project in a short video on Instagram. In the clip, he says, “I think the purpose of this album is for the listener to understand me better as a person,” indicating that he wrote the entire album for the love of music. Direct communication with the audience, without any middlemen.

Zayn Malik’s upcoming album was co-produced by Dave Cobb, known for his contributions to country and rock music with artists such as Chris Stapleton, Brandi Carlile and Lady Gaga.

The publication revealed that Malik had been working on the album independently at his home in Pennsylvania for several years before reaching out to the Grammy-winning producer. Cobb said the singer created a unique world with the album, describing it as a raw expression straight from his soul.

Malik hinted at working on a record that he believed people wouldn’t expect, describing departure from his usual sound and drew on some real-life experiences. It was explained that this album was one of them.
