CM Saini announced that a joint committee comprising senior officials from the Central Water Commission (CWC),
CM Saini : Haryana Government, and Delhi Government will be set up to make the Yamuna River clean and pure, following the model of Maa Ganga. This body will not only focus on cleaning the river but also address other related issues.
Speaking to the media after attending the meeting on “Inter-State Coordination Related to Yamuna Water Rejuvenation” chaired by Union Jal Shakti Minister C.R. Patil in New Delhi, the Chief Minister said that under the new Delhi Government led by Rekha Gupta, plans are being prepared and implemented swiftly to restore the Yamuna. He highlighted that sewage from drains is now being treated through Sewage Treatment Plants (STPs) before being released into the river, with the work progressing at a rapid pace.
Sharing progress, CM Saini revealed that 16,000 metric tonnes of garbage has already been removed from the Yamuna. He assured that the rejuvenation work, aligned with the vision of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, will soon deliver visible results, making the river clean and pure.
He noted that the BOD level of the drain entering the Yamuna at Palla village in Karnal is currently 80, and steps are being taken to purify it further. Significant improvement has also been observed in the Yamuna’s water quality at Okhla in Faridabad. So far, 44 STPs are operational, treating about 620 MLD of water daily, while 9 additional STPs are being set up to treat another 510 MLD.
The Chief Minister stressed that environmental and water issues transcend boundaries, making it essential for both states to work together. He said strict directions have been issued to prevent untreated waste from entering the river and informed that experts from both Delhi and Haryana will monitor Najafgarh Lake and drain. Regular checks will also be conducted on industrial discharge in Haryana to monitor BOD levels.
Condemning the recent attack on Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta, Saini called it an unfortunate incident.
The meeting was also attended by Union Secretary , Delhi Chief Secretary Dharmendra Kumar, Haryana Additional Chief Secretary Vineet Garg, Additional Chief Secretary Irrigation Department Anurag Agarwal, and senior officials from the Irrigation and Environment Departments.
