Gavin Larsen returns as New Zealand Cricket’s selection manager in 2025, joining head coach Rob Walter to shape the future of the Blackcaps with his vast experience and passion for the game.
In a significant move, New Zealand Cricket (NZC) has officially announced the return of former cricketer Gavin Larsen as the new selection manager for the national team. The 63-year-old cricket veteran will join hands with head coach Rob Walter to assist in selecting squads for New Zealand’s senior team, New Zealand A, and New Zealand XI tours.
Larsen, a well-respected figure in New Zealand cricket, replaces Sam Wells in this important role. Notably, this isn’t Larsen’s first stint as selection manager. He previously held the position from 2015 to 2023 before taking on the role of Performance Director at Warwickshire. Recently, he also gained experience working with the Nelson Giants basketball team, showcasing his versatile leadership skills.

Expressing his enthusiasm, Larsen said, “I feel absolutely honoured to be stepping back into the BLACKCAPS and the national high-performance environment. I’m hugely passionate about cricket in this country, and to be given another opportunity to contribute at the highest level is really exciting. I can’t wait to get started this summer and hopefully help play a part in continuing the success of the BLACKCAPS.”
Daryl Gibson, New Zealand Cricket’s Chief High Performance Officer, also praised Larsen’s appointment, emphasizing his deep understanding of New Zealand Cricket’s culture and requirements. Gibson remarked, “Gavin’s familiarity with the role and his understanding of the requirements played an important part in his appointment. But we were also impressed with his passion and energy, and his desire to get back into the game and help make a difference.”
Regarding the selection process, Gibson confirmed that there will be no changes to the current model. Head coach Rob Walter will retain the final authority on team selections, working closely with Larsen to ensure a balanced and competitive squad.
Gavin Larsen is set to officially begin his new role as selection manager on November 3. His extensive experience as a player, coach, and administrator is expected to bring valuable insights and stability to the New Zealand Cricket team’s selection process, aiming to build a strong and successful future for the BLACKCAPS.
