Delhi government to provide free LPG cylinders to women from EWS families this Holi. Scheme expected to cost ₹300 crore, providing direct festival relief to low-income households.
The Delhi government is set to provide free LPG cylinders to women from Economically Weaker Section (EWS) families this Holi. The initiative is expected to cost around ₹300 crore and aims to ease the financial burden on low-income households during the festival season.
According to sources, the government is planning to distribute the free cooking gas cylinders to EWS women in March, coinciding with the Holi festival. The proposal for this welfare scheme was approved during a Delhi Cabinet meeting chaired by Chief Minister Rekha Gupta on Tuesday morning (January 20).
During the meeting, the Cabinet extensively discussed the framework of the scheme and gave its theoretical approval for implementation. Under the plan, women from EWS families holding ration cards will receive free LPG cylinders during Holi and Diwali. The government believes this move will provide direct relief to families facing rising prices.
Part of the Election Promise
The scheme was part of the BJP’s election manifesto for the Delhi Assembly elections, which promised free cooking gas cylinders for EWS households during major festivals like Holi and Diwali. Additionally, the manifesto included a commitment to provide LPG cylinders at a subsidized rate of ₹500 throughout the year for economically weaker families.

After assuming power, the government has already implemented some of its key election promises, such as the rollout of the Ayushman Bharat health insurance scheme in Delhi and setting up Atal Canteens to provide meals at just ₹5. The free LPG cylinder initiative is part of this broader commitment to public welfare.
Estimated Cost and Beneficiary Identification
Sources indicate that implementing the scheme is expected to cost approximately ₹300 crore. Officials have clarified that beneficiaries will be identified based on ration cards to ensure the scheme reaches the intended recipients without any discrepancies.
Holi Festival Relief for Families
If implemented as planned, the initiative will provide a welcome relief for EWS families ahead of Holi. This scheme will help reduce household expenses during the festival season and ensure that women can manage their kitchen budgets more efficiently.
The Delhi government’s proactive approach reflects its focus on supporting economically weaker households while fulfilling election promises, providing both immediate relief and long-term welfare benefits to the city’s residents.
