Delhi government plans to install 7,000 new EV charging stations by 2026-end, boosting electric vehicle infrastructure and reducing reliance on private vehicles.
The Delhi government is gearing up to strengthen its electric vehicle (EV) infrastructure, with plans to set up approximately 7,000 new EV charging stations by the end of 2026. These new stations will be strategically installed along the Rapid Rail Corridor and at Delhi Metro stations to accommodate private EVs, as well as the anticipated increase in electric buses and shared transport services.
Currently, Delhi has 8,849 operational EV charging stations. Once the new stations are installed, the total count will rise to 15,849. However, considering the rapid growth of EV adoption in the city, this number is still insufficient. According to Delhi government data, nearly 700,000 vehicles have already been registered on the EV portal for aggregators, delivery services, and e-commerce companies. Experts estimate that by December 2026, the capital will require around 36,150 charging stations to meet demand.

Reducing Dependence on Private Vehicles
Officials have emphasized that alongside the expansion of charging infrastructure, the Delhi government is also focusing on reducing reliance on private vehicles by expanding the city’s bus fleet. In collaboration with the Delhi Traffic Police, authorities have identified 62 major traffic-congested locations and outlined 215 improvement projects. So far, 83 projects have been completed, while 50 are expected to be finished within the next six months. Some projects have been delayed due to infrastructure constraints and practical challenges.
Development Works Launched in RK Puram
In a recent announcement, Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta inaugurated development projects worth approximately ₹100 crore in the RK Puram constituency. Speaking at the event, the CM assured that funding will no longer be a constraint for development work across Delhi. The projects include repairing roads, renovating old and dilapidated community halls, upgrading community centers, and beautifying local parks. Open gym equipment will also be installed in parks to promote public health and fitness.
CM Gupta added that previously, MPs and MLAs had limited funds, which often led to delays in regional development projects. Under the current administration, led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi and supported by the Delhi government, local representatives have been assured that funding for developmental work will not be an issue. The Delhi government is also committed to providing all essential amenities in areas like RK Puram, which have a high concentration of informal settlements.
With these initiatives, Delhi is poised to not only expand its EV infrastructure but also significantly enhance urban mobility, sustainability, and the quality of life for its residents.
