AAP questions government over lack of transparency on India-US trade deal, highlighting risks to farmers, industries, and the economy. Full details demanded
Amid the ongoing Parliament session, the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) has raised sharp questions over the lack of transparency regarding the recent India-US trade deal. In a press conference, AAP Gujarat state secretary Sagar Rabari and state spokesperson Dr. Karan Barot criticized the central government for not publicly sharing the details of the agreement, calling it “highly concerning.”
Sagar Rabari said, “Despite Parliament being in session, the government has not provided any official information on the India-US trade deal. This gives the impression that decisions for a country of over 1.4 billion people are being dictated by the US President, rather than our elected leaders.”
He highlighted that India has benefited significantly from importing crude oil from Russia, with savings of approximately ₹1.64 lakh crore. However, Rabari alleged that these imports are being phased out to appease the US, despite it being economically disadvantageous for India.
Raising questions about tariff reductions, he said, “While the government claims tariffs have been reduced from 25% to 18%, in reality, US tariffs on Indian products were previously only 2–3%, now increasing to 18%. This is a clear attempt by the US to dominate the Indian market, while Indian industries and farmers are left vulnerable.”
Rabari warned that American agricultural products entering India at lower costs could harm Indian farmers. He also criticized statements by Commerce Minister Piyush Goyal, who claimed that Indian farmers would not be affected, even as product prices in India are expected to drop due to cheaper imports. “If imports increase, how can farmers remain unaffected?” he questioned.

The AAP leaders stressed that important agreements should be discussed and debated in Parliament, not announced by foreign leaders. Rabari added, “Prime Minister Narendra Modi and other senior ministers seem to avoid discussing this trade deal in Parliament, possibly fearing backlash. But delaying transparency only benefits foreign powers and puts India’s economy at risk.”
Industries such as textiles, gems and jewelry, and pharmaceuticals could face major losses due to the new tariff structure, he noted, warning of increased unemployment, reduced demand, and a potential economic slowdown.
The AAP has demanded full disclosure of the deal, including sector-wise and item-wise tariff exemptions and duty rates. Rabari emphasized that details such as the impact on American cotton, fruits, and other products must be made public to allow Indian industries and farmers to prepare for competition.
He concluded by urging the government to publicly release the full details of the trade deal and to renegotiate it in Parliament to safeguard India’s economic interests. “If the public sees the complete information, AAP will take every step to explain its implications to farmers and businesses,” Rabari said.
