CBSE Board Exam 2026 introduces a two-attempt system for Class 10, revised exam pattern, stricter eligibility rules and competency-based assessment for Classes 10 and 12. Check full details.
The Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) has introduced significant reforms in the Class 10 and Class 12 board examinations for 2026, aligning the assessment framework with the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020. With board exams beginning on February 17, 2026, students are advised to familiarise themselves with the revised rules, exam structure and eligibility requirements to avoid last-minute confusion.
Two-Attempt System Introduced for Class 10
One of the most important changes for Class 10 students is the implementation of a two-attempt examination system. The first board exam will be conducted in February 2026 and will remain compulsory for all students.
A second optional attempt will be held in May 2026 for students who wish to improve their scores. CBSE has clarified that the best score out of the two attempts will be considered for the final result, a move aimed at reducing exam stress and allowing performance improvement.
Exam Pattern Shifts Towards Competency-Based Learning
CBSE has also revised the question paper design to emphasise conceptual understanding and practical application. Under the new pattern:
50% of the paper will include competency-based questions, such as case studies and real-life problem-solving
20% will consist of objective-type questions
The remaining 30% will include short- and long-answer questions
This structure will be applicable to both Class 10 and Class 12 examinations, encouraging analytical thinking over rote learning.

Section-Wise Answering Rules Made Mandatory
To ensure clarity and proper evaluation, CBSE has enforced strict sectional answering guidelines in selected subjects. In Science, students must write Physics, Chemistry and Biology answers in their respective sections. Similarly, Social Science answers must be written subject-wise, such as History and Geography.
The board has warned that answers written in the wrong section will not be evaluated, making it essential for students to carefully follow the paper format.
Attendance, Internal Assessment and Registration Rules Tightened
CBSE has strengthened eligibility norms for board exams. Students must maintain a minimum attendance of 75% to be eligible to appear. Additionally, internal assessments will now contribute between 20% and 40% of total marks, depending on the subject.
All students must also be registered on the Pariksha Sangam Portal, where each candidate will receive a unique APAAR ID for digital academic record-keeping and future tracking.
Exam Schedule and Mode
According to CBSE, the Class 10 board exams will conclude on March 11, 2026, while Class 12 exams will continue until April 10, 2026. All examinations will be conducted in offline (pen-and-paper) mode at designated examination centres across India and abroad.
