Punjab Power Minister Sanjeev Arora assures an end to power cuts in Punjab from May 1. Learn about the ₹6,000cr grid upgrade and new industrial relief measures.
In a major move to provide relief to the citizens of Punjab, the State Power Minister, Sanjeev Arora, has officially assured that the state will be free from power cuts starting May 1. This announcement comes as a significant promise to stabilize the energy situation despite the intense heatwave and recent electricity shortages that have gripped the region.
Addressing the Unexpected April Power Crisis
During a high-level press conference held in Chandigarh, Minister Sanjeev Arora acknowledged that residents have been facing unscheduled power cuts in Punjab since April 18. He admitted that the sudden spike in demand caught the department off guard, as such extreme weather conditions are typically expected later in May or June.
“The entire North Indian belt is currently struggling with a similar energy crisis due to the early onset of summer. However, we are committed to ensuring that the era of power cuts in Punjab ends by the first of May,” the Minister stated.

Infrastructure Upgrades and Strategic Planning
The Minister explained that the recent disruptions were partly due to essential maintenance and the ongoing ₹6,000 crore project aimed at strengthening the state’s transmission and distribution system. While the heatwave increased the load on the grid, the government is now fast-tracking these upgrades to ensure a seamless supply during the upcoming peak summer months.
To manage the current load, the state has implemented several strategic measures:
Industrial Open Access: Industries are now permitted to purchase electricity directly during the night, reducing the daytime strain on the public grid.
Grid Monitoring: Officials are monitoring the situation 24/7 to prevent local transformer failures.
Free Electricity Commitment: Arora reaffirmed that the AAP government’s promise of free electricity remains a priority and will not be hampered by the temporary crisis of power cuts in Punjab.
Improving Situation and Relief for Consumers
As of today, the Minister reported that the electricity situation has already shown signs of improvement. With the procurement of additional power from multiple sources and the stabilization of the local distribution networks, the frequency of power cuts in Punjab has significantly decreased over the last 48 hours.
The Power Department has also urged consumers to cooperate by avoiding the use of heavy electrical appliances during peak hours, specifically after 6 PM. This collective effort is expected to assist the government in maintaining its “No Outage” promise.
Looking Ahead: A Self-Sufficient Punjab
The state remains confident in its self-sufficiency regarding power generation. With coal stocks at thermal plants being adequate and reservoir levels at Bhakra and Pong dams being higher than last year, the government is well-equipped to handle the demand.
By ending the cycle of power cuts in Punjab from May 1, the administration aims to provide a hassle-free summer for domestic, agricultural, and industrial sectors alike.
