Arvind Kejriwal boycotts Justice Swarna Kanta Sharma’s bench in the Liquor Policy Case, citing a conflict of interest. Read why the AAP leader chose Satyagraha.
In a dramatic escalation of his legal battle, Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) national convenor and former Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal announced on Monday that he will no longer seek representation or appear before the Delhi High Court in the Liquor Policy Case. In a video statement that has sent shockwaves through the legal and political landscape, Kejriwal declared a “Satyagraha” against the proceedings, citing a complete lack of faith in the impartiality of Justice Swarna Kanta Sharma.
Allegations of Conflict of Interest
The core of the controversy involves serious allegations of a conflict of interest. Arvind Kejriwal released a letter addressed to the judge, claiming that Justice Sharma’s children are part of the central government’s panel of lawyers. According to the AAP leader, these professional roles are directly linked to Solicitor General Tushar Mehta, who is representing the investigating agencies in the Liquor Policy Case.
pic.twitter.com/vhTSEZabqa

Kejriwal alleged that the judge’s son reportedly received assignments for approximately 5,904 cases between 2023 and 2025. He questioned whether any judge could remain impartial when their children’s professional advancement is effectively tied to the very prosecutor arguing the case against him.
The Path of Satyagraha
Invoking the principles of Mahatma Gandhi, Arvind Kejriwal stated that his conscience guided him to stop participating in the hearings.
“I have decided to follow the path of Satyagraha. It is not possible for me to pursue this case in her court, either in person or through counsel,” Kejriwal stated in his video.
This decision comes after the Delhi High Court previously rejected a petition to transfer the Liquor Policy Case to a different bench. Kejriwal had earlier expressed concerns over Justice Sharma’s attendance at events organized by the Akhil Bharatiya Adhivakta Parishad, an organization he claims is ideologically aligned with the BJP and RSS.
Judicial and Political Reaction
The High Court had dismissed Arvind Kejriwal’s earlier recusal plea, terming the allegations of bias as “baseless.” Justice Sharma, in her ruling, emphasized that judicial independence cannot be compromised by external political pressure or “strategic character assassination.” She noted that the court’s integrity was being put on trial by the litigant.
Predictably, the BJP has slammed the move. Delhi BJP President Virendra Sachdeva condemned the statements, calling them a direct assault on democratic institutions. Sachdeva argued that such remarks against the judiciary in the Liquor Policy Case are unacceptable and represent an attempt to bypass the rule of law.
