Harpal Singh Cheema raises concerns over India’s FDI decline, investor confidence, and policy stability in a recent social media post.
In a recent social media post, Punjab Finance Minister and Aam Aadmi Party leader Harpal Singh Cheema raised concerns over India’s current foreign direct investment (FDI) climate, contrasting it with the country’s earlier global standing as a top investment destination.
According to Harpal Singh Cheema’s remarks, India was once counted among the world’s leading economies for foreign investment confidence, especially around 2016 when it featured in the Top-10 list globally. However, he claimed that India is no longer in the Top-15 destinations for FDI confidence today, suggesting a noticeable shift in investor sentiment.
In his post, Harpal Singh Cheema argued that investor enthusiasm has weakened over time, pointing to what he described as a gap between investment announcements and actual execution. He stated that several Memorandums of Understanding (MoUs) remain confined to paper, with limited on-ground implementation in many cases.

He further highlighted concerns around policy stability and the overall investment environment, suggesting that uncertainty in regulatory frameworks and trade negotiations may be influencing global investor decisions. According to his viewpoint, such factors are impacting India’s ability to fully capitalize on its economic potential during the current phase of growth termed “Amrit Kaal.”
Harpal Singh Cheema also criticized the central government’s approach, alleging that emphasis is being placed more on public messaging and headline management rather than deep structural reforms needed to strengthen investor confidence. He suggested that global investors are increasingly exploring alternative destinations with more predictable policy environments.
While these claims reflect Harpal Singh Cheema’s political perspective, economic experts note that FDI trends are influenced by multiple global and domestic factors, including geopolitical tensions, inflationary pressures, and shifting global supply chains. India continues to remain one of the world’s largest and fastest-growing major economies, with ongoing reforms aimed at improving infrastructure, manufacturing capacity, and ease of doing business.
The post has added to the ongoing political discourse around India’s investment climate, highlighting the differing views between opposition parties and the government on the country’s economic trajectory.
