AAP MLA Gopal Italia’s question on textbook shortage in Gujarat schools sparks debate, with officials reportedly skipping Visavadar school event.
A sharp political and administrative discussion has emerged in Gujarat after Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) MLA Gopal Italia raised strong concerns over the shortage of textbooks in government schools of Visavadar during a district grievance committee meeting.
Italia’s pointed remark—“If there are no books in schools, what will be taught?”—reportedly created a ripple effect that reached the state capital Gandhinagar, leading to controversy around the upcoming School Entrance Festival (School Praveshotsav) program.
According to reports, two senior officers from Gandhinagar, including an IPS officer and an IAS officer, were scheduled to attend the event in Visavadar. However, after the MLA’s aggressive representation on the issue of textbook shortages, both officers allegedly opted out of the visit, sparking discussions in administrative circles.

The issue was raised during a District Grievance Committee meeting held in Junagadh, where Italia highlighted that students in government schools were not receiving textbooks even after the academic session had begun. He criticized the situation, stating that instead of “education without burden,” the system was turning into “education without books.”
Following the meeting, it is being reported that officials communicated their decision not to attend the event via email later the same day. The development has sparked debate across the education administration network in Junagadh district and beyond.
The School Entrance Festival program in Visavadar had been planned with participation from senior officials, including IPS officer Vishal Vaghela and IAS officer B.P. Chauhan. However, the situation surrounding the textbook issue and the MLA’s strong stance reportedly led to changes in their participation plans.
Local administrative circles suggest that the controversy has now reached Gandhinagar and is being closely monitored. Meanwhile, MLA Gopal Italia has continued to demand immediate distribution of textbooks and learning materials to ensure that students in government schools are not deprived of basic educational resources.
