Ryan ten Doeschate steps down as India’s assistant coach and is set to return to Kolkata Knight Riders ahead of IPL 2027 season.
Former Netherlands captain Ryan ten Doeschate has stepped down from his role as the assistant coach of the Indian men’s cricket team and is expected to return to the Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) coaching staff ahead of the IPL 2027 season. His departure marks the end of his association with the national team after a successful but challenging coaching period.
According to reports, Ten Doeschate will reunite with KKR, a franchise where he has enjoyed considerable success both as a player and as part of the support staff. The move is expected to bring back an experienced cricketing mind into the team’s coaching structure.
Ten Doeschate Leaves India Role After Limited Responsibilities
Ryan ten Doeschate joined India’s coaching setup after Rahul Dravid stepped down following India’s T20 World Cup 2024 triumph. He was initially expected to take up a major fielding coaching responsibility, but the presence of T Dilip meant that his role remained limited to that of an assistant coach.
Earlier, Ryan ten Doeschate had indicated his intention to step away from the position, stating that he was unable to contribute as much as he wanted due to the structure of the coaching team.
During his time with Team India, he contributed across batting and fielding areas but did not have a fixed long-term role within the support staff.
KKR Reunion After Successful IPL Association
Ryan ten Doeschate’s return to Kolkata Knight Riders will mark a reunion with a franchise that has been a major part of his cricketing journey.
As a player, he was part of KKR’s title-winning teams in 2012 and 2014. After retiring from playing duties, he returned to the franchise in 2022 as a fielding coach and continued in the support setup until 2024.
His tenure with KKR also witnessed another IPL title victory under head coach Chandrakant Pandit. He left the franchise after being appointed to the Indian team’s coaching staff in 2024.

Reunion With Abhishek Nayar
The move will also reunite Ryan ten Doeschate with Abhishek Nayar, who has previously worked alongside him in coaching roles. The duo shared responsibilities in India’s support staff and also had earlier associations with Kolkata Knight Riders.
Their familiarity with each other’s coaching methods could help KKR strengthen its support system ahead of the upcoming IPL season.
India Achieved Major White-Ball Success During His Tenure
During Ten Doeschate’s time with the Indian team, the side achieved significant success in limited-overs cricket. India won the 2025 Asia Cup and successfully defended the Men’s T20 World Cup title in 2026.
However, India’s Test performances during the same period remained a concern. The team suffered a Border-Gavaskar Trophy defeat in Australia and later faced home series losses against New Zealand and South Africa.
Focus Shifts Towards IPL 2027
With his expected return to Kolkata Knight Riders, Ryan ten Doeschate will now focus on helping the franchise prepare for IPL 2027. His international experience, tactical understanding and previous success with KKR could prove valuable as the team looks to build a strong squad for the upcoming season.
While an official confirmation from KKR is awaited, Ten Doeschate’s return is likely to be one of the key coaching developments ahead of IPL 2027.
