CM Yogi Adityanath says Uttar Pradesh has 28 lakh tonnes of sugar stock, enough for seven months, amid discussions over a possible sugar crisis.
Amid discussions over a possible UP sugar crisis, Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath has said that the state currently has around 28 lakh tonnes of sugar in stock. According to the Chief Minister, the available quantity is sufficient to meet the state’s consumption needs for nearly seven months.
Speaking at an appointment letter distribution programme on Tuesday, Yogi Adityanath said Uttar Pradesh is not facing any shortage of sugar. He stated that the state’s monthly sugar consumption is around four lakh tonnes, while the available stock stands at approximately 28 lakh tonnes.
Seven Months of Sugar Stock Available
Addressing concerns surrounding the UP sugar crisis, Yogi Adityanath said the existing stock provides a substantial buffer for consumers. Based on the monthly consumption figure cited by him, the current supply could meet demand for about seven months.
The Chief Minister’s statement comes amid discussions regarding sugar availability, supply and market conditions. The state administration has also been asked to remain alert against hoarding, black marketing and misleading information related to sugar supplies.
Sugar Mills to Restart From October 15
Yogi Adityanath said sugar mills across Uttar Pradesh are expected to resume operations from October 15. He said the state’s sugar mills are expected to produce around 90 lakh tonnes of sugar during the upcoming production cycle.
The Chief Minister highlighted Uttar Pradesh’s significant sugar production capacity and said the state has the ability not only to meet the requirements of its own population but also to contribute to the country’s wider sugar demand.

Government Monitoring Supply
The administration is keeping a watch on the availability and distribution of sugar to ensure that consumers do not face unnecessary difficulties. Officials have also been instructed to address issues related to hoarding and black marketing and to prevent misleading information from creating panic in the market.
Against this backdrop, Yogi Adityanath’s latest remarks are aimed at clarifying that the state currently has adequate sugar reserves.
Focus on Agriculture and Farmers
During the programme, the Chief Minister also spoke about strengthening the agriculture sector. He said agricultural technical assistants and employees associated with agricultural science centres can play an important role in helping farmers adopt better practices.
Yogi emphasised the need for a “lab-to-land” approach, saying agricultural knowledge and technology should reach farmers directly. He stressed that discussions about farming should be connected to the realities of farmers’ fields rather than being limited to offices or seminar halls.
Message to Newly Appointed Employees
Yogi Adityanath congratulated the newly appointed agricultural technical assistants and market committee secretaries. He urged them to use the opportunities provided through a transparent recruitment process to contribute to the development of Uttar Pradesh and the country.
The Chief Minister’s remarks on the UP sugar crisis come at a time when the government is highlighting the state’s available stock and future production capacity. With 28 lakh tonnes currently available and sugar mills scheduled to restart from October 15, the state expects supplies to remain adequate.
The government is also focusing on maintaining smooth distribution and preventing hoarding and black marketing. According to the figures shared by the Chief Minister, the combination of existing reserves and upcoming production is expected to support sugar availability across Uttar Pradesh.
