Bollywood actor Swara Bhasker has responded to the controversy surrounding her comments on the Jauhar sequence in Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s Padmaavat. After facing criticism on social media, the actor shared a video explaining that her remarks had been misunderstood and mistranslated.
Swara said she never described Rani Padmavati or the women who performed Jauhar as “cowards.” Instead, she said her criticism was about the message such a scene could potentially send to rape survivors and women in society.
Swara Bhasker Explains Her Padmaavat Comments
Swara Bhasker addressed the controversy through a video posted on Instagram. She explained that the viral clip came from an event held at the India International Centre in Delhi on August 31, where she discussed her earlier open letter to filmmaker Sanjay Leela Bhansali after watching Padmaavat.
According to the actor, her original comments were being circulated with a misleading translation. She clarified that she was not calling Rani Padmavati or the other women shown performing Jauhar cowardly.
She also said that people could criticise her, but they should respond to what she actually said rather than a distorted version of her remarks.
What Did Swara Bhasker Actually Say?
While discussing the climax of Padmaavat, Swara Bhasker said she wondered how a rape survivor might interpret the scene.
Her argument was that portraying death as preferable to surviving sexual violence could create a troubling message. She questioned whether a woman’s honour or perceived purity should be considered more valuable than her life.
The actor connected the discussion to what she described as the widespread problem of sexual violence and rape culture in society. Her larger point, she explained, was that survivors should never be made to feel that their lives have less value after an assault.

During her clarification, Swara Bhasker also referred to the Nirbhaya case. She highlighted the victim’s determination to survive despite suffering horrific violence.
Her comments stressed that women should not be judged by whether they survive sexual violence. Instead, she argued that society should recognise a survivor’s right to continue living and rebuilding her life.
Swara also questioned whether films dealing with historical events should be mindful of how their imagery and themes may be understood by contemporary audiences.
