Prime Minister Narendra Modi extended warm greetings to people on the auspicious occasion of Mahalaya on Saturday, praying to Maa Durga for happiness, compassion, hope, peace and prosperity across society. Several political leaders, including Union Home Minister Amit Shah and West Bengal Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari, also shared their wishes on the occasion.

PM Modi Seeks Maa Durga’s Blessings on Mahalaya
Prime Minister Narendra Modi conveyed his wishes through a post on social media platform X. He prayed that Maa Durga’s blessings would fill society with positive values and create an atmosphere of peace and prosperity.
In his message, the Prime Minister wrote, “Shubho Mahalaya! We seek the blessings of Maa Durga. May the blessings fill our society with happiness, compassion and hope. May there be peace and prosperity all around.”
His message highlighted the spiritual significance of Mahalaya and the hope associated with the blessings of the Goddess. The Shubho Mahalaya message also reflected a wish for greater happiness and harmony among people.
Amit Shah Extends Greetings to the People
Union Home Minister Amit Shah also extended his wishes on the sacred occasion. He prayed that Maa Durga would bless people with joy, good health, well-being and prosperity.

Suvendu Adhikari Wishes Happiness, Peace and Unity
West Bengal Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari also greeted people on Mahalaya and expressed hope that the arrival of Maa Durga would bring happiness, peace and prosperity to everyone.
In his message on X, Adhikari extended his heartfelt wishes at the beginning of Debi Pokhkhali. He prayed that the cultural heritage, traditions, unity and brotherhood of West Bengal would grow stronger.

Devotees Take Holy Dips in West Bengal and Tamil Nadu
Mahalaya was observed with religious devotion in different parts of the country. In Siliguri, West Bengal, devotees gathered at Lal Mohan Mallick Niranjan Ghat to take a holy dip.
In Tamil Nadu, thousands of devotees visited the ghats along the Cauvery River in Srirangam, Tiruchirappalli, to observe Mahalaya Amavasya. The occasion falls during the Tamil month of Purattasi and is associated with prayers and rituals performed in memory of departed ancestors.
Devotees travelled from several districts, including Tiruchirappalli, Thanjavur, Ariyalur, Perambalur, Pudukkottai and Karaikudi. After completing the rituals, many visited prominent religious sites, including Sri Ranganathaswamy Temple in Srirangam, Thiruvanaikaval Jambukeswarar Temple and Samayapuram Mariamman Temple.
Special Rituals Performed on Mahalaya Amavasya in Rameswaram
In Rameswaram, large numbers of devotees gathered at Agni Theertha to take holy dips in the sea and perform religious ceremonies. Many carried out tarpanam, a ritual offering made to honour their ancestors.
Mahalaya Amavasya holds special importance for Hindus as it marks the concluding phase of Pitru Paksha, the period dedicated to remembering and paying homage to departed family members. During these days, families perform prayers and traditional rites for the peace of their ancestors.
Mahalaya is observed at the end of Pitru Paksha according to the Hindu lunar calendar. While the occasion is associated with ancestral rituals in many regions, it also carries special significance in Bengal as devotees prepare to welcome Maa Durga.
From political greetings to religious ceremonies at sacred riverbanks and pilgrimage sites, Shubho Mahalaya was marked by prayers, devotion and messages of peace, unity and prosperity across the country.
