AAP MLA Gopal Italia protests power cuts in Junagadh with farmers, handing lanterns to officials and demanding a permanent solution.
Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) MLA from Visavadar, Gopal Italia, staged an unusual protest against alleged power supply disruptions in Gujarat’s Junagadh district by handing lanterns to officials at the Superintending Engineer (SE) office. Accompanied by farmers, Italia criticised the BJP government over what he described as persistent electricity problems in rural areas and demanded a permanent solution from the power department.
According to Italia, villages have been experiencing serious electricity supply issues for the past 15–20 days. He alleged that power cuts during the evening have caused difficulties for residents, particularly during Navratri celebrations and the ongoing agricultural season.
The Gopal Italia Junagadh power crisis protest was aimed at highlighting the difficulties faced by farmers and rural households because of irregular electricity supply.
AAP MLA Raises Questions Over Navratri Power Cuts
Italia alleged that electricity disruptions occur in several rural parts of Junagadh around the time residents gather for evening prayers and aarti during Navratri. He questioned the government’s claims of supporting religious traditions, arguing that uninterrupted electricity should also be ensured during important festivals.
The AAP leader said repeated power cuts affect daily household activities as well as religious gatherings. He also claimed that residents face difficulties when trying to contact electricity department officials to report outages.
According to Italia, calls to the department often go unanswered, while those who respond allegedly cite load shedding without providing a clear resolution.

Farmers Face Difficulties During the Agricultural Season
The AAP MLA also highlighted the importance of a reliable power supply for agricultural activities. With farmers preparing for the rabi sowing season and requiring electricity to irrigate their fields, he argued that unpredictable outages could create additional challenges.
Italia criticised the government for allowing farmers and rural residents to bear the burden of electricity shortages. In a pointed remark, he suggested that if load shedding was necessary, power cuts should be imposed at BJP’s Kamalam party offices and Ahmedabad Airport instead of farmers’ fields.
The Gopal Italia Junagadh power crisis issue, according to the MLA, reflects the need for better planning and more effective management of electricity distribution.
He also alleged that power cuts disrupt ordinary household routines, leaving residents struggling to carry out everyday activities after sunset.
Lanterns Handed to Officials at SE Office
As part of the protest, Italia and a large group of farmers reached the office of Junagadh’s Superintending Engineer. They handed lanterns to officials as a symbolic demonstration against the alleged shortage and irregular supply of electricity.
The lanterns were intended to draw attention to what the AAP leader described as a return to an era when people had to depend on traditional lighting because electricity was unavailable.
During the demonstration, Italia demanded that the department address the problem instead of repeatedly citing load shedding. He also called for a definite timeline for resolving both minor and major electricity-related complaints.
According to Italia, officials did not provide a specific date by which the problems would be resolved. He expressed dissatisfaction with the response and questioned why residents still had to organise protests to secure reliable electricity.
Demand for Better Electricity Infrastructure
Italia argued that the government should prioritise dependable electricity supply before introducing new technologies such as smart meters. He said households and farms need a system that delivers consistent power without frequent outages, tripping or voltage-related disruptions.
The MLA maintained that modernisation should improve the quality of electricity services rather than leave consumers dealing with unresolved basic problems.
The Gopal Italia Junagadh power crisis protest also brought attention to the wider question of accountability in rural electricity distribution. The AAP leader urged the government and power department to take concrete steps to address residents’ complaints.
AAP Seeks a Permanent Solution
The protest was intended to press authorities for a clear action plan and a reliable schedule for resolving electricity supply issues. Farmers and rural residents depend on regular power for irrigation, household activities and other essential needs.
Italia criticised the gap between development claims and the problems he said people continue to face on the ground. He argued that access to dependable electricity should remain a priority for the government.
The Gopal Italia Junagadh power crisis controversy now puts the spotlight on the need for a response from the electricity department regarding the reported outages, their causes and the steps being taken to address them.
The allegations made by Italia and the AAP require an official response from the concerned authorities to establish the extent of the disruption and clarify what measures, if any, are planned to improve electricity supply in the affected areas.
