Dia Mirza faces criticism from Mumbai Mayor Ritu Tawde over her anti-firecracker video and participation in a BMC Environment Day event.
The controversy surrounding actor Dia Mirza’s video appealing to people to avoid bursting firecrackers during Diwali has taken a new turn. Mumbai Mayor Ritu Tawde has raised questions about the actor’s participation in a Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) event held on June 5, asking why she was invited to the civic body’s Environment Day programme.
The issue comes after the BMC removed Dia Mirza’s anti-firecracker video from its social media platforms following objections from several BJP leaders. Videos recorded by other celebrities as part of the same awareness campaign reportedly remained online.
Dia Mirza’s June 5 BMC Event Appearance Under Scrutiny
The BMC had involved several celebrities in an awareness campaign encouraging people to avoid firecrackers and reduce air pollution during Diwali. Dia Mirza was among those who recorded a video promoting a healthier and more environmentally conscious celebration.
However, the actor’s association with the civic body was not limited to this campaign. She had also attended an Environment Day event organised by the BMC on June 5 at its headquarters in Mumbai.
BMC Commissioner Ashwini Bhide and several BJP officials were present at the programme. Following the latest controversy, Mayor Ritu Tawde has expressed dissatisfaction over Mirza’s participation and said she would seek an explanation from the municipal commissioner.

Mayor Ritu Tawde Makes Remarks on Dia Mirza
Ritu Tawde clarified that the removal of Dia Mirza’s video was not related to the actor’s religion. She alleged that Mirza had previously taken positions against Hindu interests and the government.
The mayor said the objection was related to what she described as the actor’s selective approach to public issues. She added that Mirza was free to share her views on her personal social media accounts but questioned their presence on the BMC’s official platforms.
Tawde also said she would discuss the matter with the BMC commissioner and seek to ensure that proposals involving celebrities are reviewed by the mayor’s office in the future.
Mayor Threatens to Blacklist Dia Mirza
The controversy intensified after Tawde indicated that the actor could be blacklisted by the Mahayuti government. She alleged that Mirza engaged in selective propaganda and said the civic body should explain why her video was initially uploaded and subsequently removed.
The mayor also stated that she wanted the BMC’s public relations department to consult the mayor’s office before approving similar proposals in the future.
However, the BMC has not provided an official reason for taking down Dia Mirza’s video.
Dia Mirza Responds to the Controversy
Reacting to the issue, Dia Mirza explained that her video was created to spread public awareness about celebrating Diwali responsibly.
In her statement, the actor said Diwali represents the victory of light over darkness, knowledge over ignorance and hope over despair. She clarified that the video was intended to encourage people to celebrate the festival in a healthier and more mindful manner.
Mirza also highlighted air pollution as a public health concern, stating that every effort to reduce pollution contributes towards creating a better environment for everyone.
