AAP leader Dr. Karan Barot alleged irregularities in Gujarat local body elections, claiming candidates were stopped, voting rights were denied, and democracy was violated.
Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) Gujarat spokesperson Dr. Karan Barot has made serious allegations regarding the recently held local self-government elections, claiming that democratic norms were violated and opposition candidates were systematically targeted.
According to Dr. Barot, several AAP candidates were allegedly prevented from filing nominations, while others were stopped from campaigning even after successfully submitting their nomination papers. He further claimed that in multiple areas, party workers faced obstruction during election activities.
Allegations of Undemocratic Practices
Dr. Karan Barot stated that more than 700 candidates were declared elected unopposed, which he termed as a “serious blow to democracy.” He alleged that voters’ rights were compromised and the electoral process was manipulated to favor certain outcomes.
He also claimed that AAP candidates faced coordinated attempts to restrict their participation in the elections, including barriers during nomination and campaigning phases.

Post-Election Incidents Reported
The AAP spokesperson further alleged that after the elections, several incidents of damage to public infrastructure were reported in areas where opposition parties received higher support. These included damaged roads and removal of electricity poles in certain localities.
He claimed that such incidents reflect an attempt to intimidate voters and suppress political opposition.
Concerns Over Voting Irregularities
Dr. Barot also raised concerns about voting day irregularities, alleging that many voters were unable to cast their ballots due to missing names from voter lists or incorrect polling booth allocations.
He cited a case where an entire residential society reportedly comprising around 1,000 residents was unable to vote, calling it a major administrative failure.
Call for Electoral Transparency
AAP has demanded accountability and transparency in the electoral process, urging authorities to investigate the alleged irregularities. Dr. Karan Barot stated that such incidents raise serious questions about the fairness of local body elections in Gujarat.
