AAP Surat leader Dharmesh Bhanderi criticizes Smriti Irani’s press conference, calls central budget a failure for Surat’s diamond and textile industries, demands transparency from BJP.

 Reacting to former Union Minister Smriti Irani’s press conference in Surat, AAP Surat City President Dharmesh Bhanderi hit back, alleging that the event was organized to mislead citizens and conceal the lack of benefits for Surat in the central budget.

Bhanderi stated that the press conference was purely an attempt to create confusion among the public. He highlighted that despite Surat being a major hub for the diamond and textile industries, the latest budget offered no specific provisions or incentives for these critical sectors. “The city has not received any tangible benefits from the budget, and today’s press conference was just a cover-up for this reality,” Dharmesh Bhanderi said.

Addressing concerns about the proposed PM Mitra Park project, which is to be built approximately 45 kilometers from Surat Railway Station, Dharmesh Bhanderi questioned whether it would face the same fate as the Diamond Bourse, which remains largely unused. He emphasized that the city’s diamond industry is concentrated in areas like Mahidharpura, Varachha Road, and Katargam, yet the government continues to develop projects far from these economic hubs, making them inefficient and unhelpful for local businesses.

Dharmesh Bhanderi also criticized the BJP for remaining silent on the pressing issues faced by Surat traders, including complex GST processes, bureaucratic hurdles, and daily business challenges. “The traders highlighted by the press conference belong to BJP-affiliated groups, and the wider business community remains dissatisfied with the budget’s provisions,” he said.

Highlighting regional disparities, Dharmesh Bhanderi pointed out that smaller cities like Jodhpur, Patna, and Guwahati received announcements for IITs and gaming hubs, while Surat, with a population exceeding 8 million and being one of the fastest-growing cities in India, continues to be overlooked by both central and state governments.

The press conference was attended by Smriti Irani and former Gujarat Minister Purnesh Modi; however, neither clarified what tangible benefits Surat would receive under the new budget. Bhanderi concluded by demanding that the BJP and former Union Minister publicly address the budgetary neglect of Surat, stressing that the city’s MSME and small-scale industries continue to suffer from the lack of government support.
