Bikaner’s Khejri conservation movement continues as former minister opens a front and saints meet CM Bhajanlal Sharma. Protesters demand strict laws to protect iconic trees amid ongoing relay fasts and sit-ins.
Despite assurances from the Chief Minister Bhajanlal Sharma, the Khejri tree conservation movement in Bikaner continues. The protest, including ongoing relay fasts and sit-ins, has intensified due to claims of tree felling.
The movement, which initially paused on the 5th after CM Bhajanlal Sharma assured strict legislation for Khejri protection in the assembly, has resumed. Currently, around 50 people participate in relay fasts daily, while devotees and environmentalists continue to reach Bikaner in support of preserving the Khejri trees.
Ex-MLA Claims Khejri Trees Felled
On the 5th, the CM Bhajanlal Sharma had promised strict laws for Khejri protection on the assembly floor, prompting saints to end their hunger strike. However, on the night of the 8th, former MLA Divya Maderna from Osian shared videos and images on social media showing the alleged felling of over 100 Khejri trees that occurred on Sunday night.
Saint Delegation Meets CM Bhajanlal Sharma
Following these reports, a delegation from the saint community visited the CM’s residence in Jaipur to discuss the matter. During the meeting, the CM reiterated his assurance to introduce strict conservation laws, after which the delegation returned to Bikaner. Protesters at the site are awaiting further guidance from the saints.

What the CM Bhajanlal Sharma Said After Meeting the Saints
CM Bhajanlal Sharma expressed his deep appreciation after meeting the Bishnoi saints and other community leaders at his residence. “The affection and blessings received today for our government’s commitment to Khejri conservation provide me with renewed energy to serve the state. Protecting nature and the environment is the foundation of our culture, and together, we will strengthen this cause,” he said.
Former Minister Demands Swift Action
Meanwhile, former Congress minister B.D. Kalla has also opened a front against the government on the Khejri issue. He stated that strict laws must be implemented immediately to protect the Khejri trees, calling the delay “beyond comprehension.” Kalla questioned why the law was not introduced when the assembly session was extended by a day, suggesting that clear assurances from the CM to enact the law within 15 days could automatically end the protest and hunger strike.
The movement has now become a significant symbol of environmental activism in the desert region, highlighting the community’s commitment to protecting Rajasthan’s iconic Khejri trees.
