Esudan Garhvi, the Gujarat state president of the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP), celebrated National Farmers’ Day by ploughing fields and highlighting the struggles of farmers under the current BJP government. During the event, Garhvi extended his greetings to over 5.4 million farmer families in Gujarat and raised concerns over policies that, he said, are forcing farmers to abandon agriculture.
Addressing a large gathering of farmers, youth leaders, and environmental activists, Garhvi said, “While BJP leaders and industrialists prosper, the farmers are left behind. Government policies are pushing farmers to quit farming, making way for corporate takeover in agriculture. In the next decade, industrialists may charge exorbitant rates for basic crops like wheat and edible oil.”
Garhvi criticized the implementation of crop insurance and loan waivers, pointing out that Prime Minister Narendra Modi promised effective crop insurance and loan relief for farmers, yet in Gujarat, crop insurance schemes are largely inactive. “While the government waived loans worth ₹16 lakh crore for 50 industrialists, not a single farmer’s debt has been cleared. This shows a clear bias against agriculture,” he said.

He also highlighted the ongoing agrarian crisis, mentioning that in the past four months, nearly eight farmers from various communities in Gujarat have committed suicide due to mounting debts and poor support systems. “Farmers in the US receive subsidies up to ₹54 lakh, whereas our farmers get an average of just ₹21,000, with no guaranteed fair price for crops. The APMC system fails them, seeds and fertilizers are expensive, and the government turns a blind eye to black-market practices,” Garhvi added.
Criticizing the government’s approach to land and natural resources, Garhvi stated, “Farmers say this is BJP’s village, yet the party itself is displacing them from their lands. The so-called development comes at the cost of water, forests, and soil. Such policies are anti-farmer and threaten the very foundation of rural life in Gujarat.”
He urged farmers to unite for pro-farmer policies ensuring that crops like wheat, peanuts, and chickpeas are purchased at Minimum Support Prices (MSP) before sowing. “We need a system where the government guarantees fair prices and supports farmers’ livelihoods. Only then can agriculture remain sustainable and secure,” Garhvi emphasized.
The AAP leader also criticized the government’s favoritism toward industrialists and stressed the importance of prioritizing farmers in India’s agrarian economy. With 5.4 million farmers and nearly 12 million dependents in Gujarat alone, Garhvi said, “Agriculture is not just an occupation; it is the backbone of our country. Policies ignoring farmers’ welfare will harm our nation’s future.”
