Arvind Kejriwal targets PM Modi over the US Russia sanctions bill, alleging that India’s interests are being compromised amid growing US pressure.
Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) national convenor Arvind Kejriwal has criticised Prime Minister Narendra Modi over the US Senate’s passage of a bill proposing tougher measures against countries that continue to purchase Russian oil and gas.
Kejriwal alleged that the Indian government was not doing enough to safeguard the country’s economic and strategic interests amid growing pressure from the United States over India’s energy trade with Russia.
Arvind Kejriwal Questions Government’s Stand
In a post on X, Arvind Kejriwal accused Prime Minister Modi of accepting decisions taken by US President Donald Trump and alleged that Washington’s influence over India’s affairs was increasing.
Kejriwal claimed that India should take decisions based on its own national interests rather than external pressure. His comments came shortly after the US Senate approved a Russia sanctions bill that could impose significant tariffs on countries continuing to purchase Russian energy.

US Senate Passes Russia Sanctions Bill
The legislation, named after the late US Senator Lindsey Graham, was approved by the US Senate with an 86-11 vote. The proposed measure could impose tariffs of up to 100 per cent on major buyers of Russian crude oil and natural gas, potentially affecting countries including India and China.
However, the bill is not yet law. It would have to clear the US House of Representatives before moving through the remaining legislative process.
According to reports, the proposed legislation also includes provisions for sanctions against senior Russian officials and foreign entities alleged to support Russia’s defence sector.
What the Bill Could Mean for India
India has remained a major buyer of Russian crude oil, particularly since global energy markets were disrupted following the Russia-Ukraine conflict. Any additional US trade measures could potentially have implications for India’s energy costs, international trade and diplomatic relations.
The issue has therefore become a significant point of political debate in India. Arvind Kejriwal has used the development to question the Centre’s approach towards US pressure and India’s continuing energy relationship with Russia.
Kejriwal Also Raises E20 Fuel Concerns
Separately, Arvind Kejriwal has urged consumers to reconsider purchasing petrol and diesel vehicles until the government clarifies its position on E20 fuel.
He alleged that adequate testing had not been carried out before the wider implementation of E20 fuel and claimed that vehicle mileage had fallen significantly. He cited reductions of around 25–30 per cent across different categories of vehicles, including two-wheelers, cars and SUVs.
The government has previously promoted ethanol blending as part of India’s efforts to reduce dependence on imported fossil fuels and lower emissions. However, concerns about compatibility, mileage and long-term vehicle performance have become part of the ongoing public debate.
Political Debate Intensifies
The comments by Arvind Kejriwal come at a time when India’s energy purchases from Russia and the country’s relationship with the United States remain closely watched.
For the proposed US sanctions bill to take effect, it would still need approval from the House of Representatives and completion of the US legislative process. Until then, its final impact on India and other Russian energy buyers remains uncertain.
The political debate in India is nevertheless likely to continue, with the opposition pressing the Centre to explain how it plans to protect India’s economic interests while managing relations with Washington and Moscow.
