Arvind Kejriwal urges PM Narendra Modi to roll back the E20 fuel programme, citing concerns over mileage, vehicle performance and public feedback.
Arvind Kejriwal has announced that he will write to Prime Minister Narendra Modi, urging the Central Government to reconsider and roll back the E20 fuel programme amid growing concerns from vehicle owners.
In a video message shared on social media, Kejriwal questioned the nationwide implementation of 20% ethanol-blended petrol, commonly known as E20 fuel. He argued that before introducing such a major policy across the country, extensive testing should have been conducted on a limited scale to assess its impact on vehicles and consumers.
The AAP national convenor claimed that many vehicle owners have reported reduced fuel efficiency after switching to E20 petrol. According to him, concerns regarding mileage and long-term vehicle performance are becoming increasingly common among motorists.
Kejriwal also raised questions about accountability, asking whether vehicle owners would receive compensation if their vehicles suffered damage due to the use of ethanol-blended fuel. He emphasized that public concerns should be addressed transparently before expanding the programme further.

Referring to recent discussions surrounding the policy, Kejriwal alleged that the Centre had described the E20 initiative as an experimental programme during court proceedings. He further claimed that subsequent clarifications from government authorities created confusion regarding the policy’s status and future direction.
The AAP leader also pointed to industry observations suggesting that ethanol contains lower energy content than conventional petrol, which could potentially affect fuel economy in some vehicles.
Calling for a broader public debate on the issue, Kejriwal said he intends to submit a detailed letter to the Prime Minister in the coming days. He has also invited citizens to share their suggestions and concerns through social media, stating that public feedback would help shape the issues raised in his communication to the government.
The E20 fuel programme is part of India’s broader strategy to increase ethanol blending, reduce dependence on imported crude oil, and promote cleaner energy alternatives. However, the policy continues to generate discussion among vehicle owners, industry experts, and political leaders regarding its long-term impact on vehicle performance and fuel efficiency.
