Banks may face a three-day disruption from September 11 due to a nationwide strike, followed by the second Saturday and Sunday. Know what customers should do.
Bank customers across India may face disruption in branch-based services from Friday, September 11, as bank employee unions have announced a nationwide one-day strike. With September 12 being the second Saturday and September 13 falling on Sunday, customers could effectively face three consecutive days without regular branch operations.
The bank strike September 11 has been called by the United Forum of Bank Unions (UFBU) over several issues, including the demand for a five-day working week and objections to the current Performance Linked Incentive (PLI) structure for senior bank officers.
State Bank of India (SBI) and Union Bank of India have already cautioned customers that branch-related services may be affected during the strike.
Why Are Bank Employees Going on Strike?
One of the major demands behind the bank strike September 11 is the implementation of a five-day banking week. Bank unions are seeking implementation of an understanding reached between the Indian Banks’ Association (IBA) and employee organisations under the March 8, 2024 settlement and joint note.
Under the proposed arrangement, Saturdays other than the second and fourth Saturdays would become holidays. Bank employees would instead work additional hours during weekdays from Monday to Friday.
The unions are also raising concerns about the Performance Linked Incentive system applicable to senior officers. Under the existing framework, Scale IV officers and above may receive PLI of up to 365 days of basic pay plus dearness allowance, while officers up to Scale III have a maximum limit of 15 days.
Why Will Banks Effectively Remain Closed for Three Days?
The bank strike September 11 falls on a Friday. It will immediately be followed by the second Saturday on September 12 and Sunday on September 13.
However, the three-day period does not mean that every banking facility will stop functioning. The strike primarily affects physical branch operations, while several digital services are expected to continue as usual.
Customers can continue using internet banking, mobile banking, UPI and other online facilities. SBI has advised its customers to make use of digital platforms such as YONO, mobile banking and internet banking. ATMs and Automated Deposit and Withdrawal Machines (ADWMs) are also expected to remain available.
What Should Bank Customers Do?
Customers who have important branch-related work should avoid waiting until the strike begins. A few simple steps can help reduce inconvenience during the three-day period.
Complete Urgent Branch Work in Advance
People who need to deposit or withdraw cash at a branch, submit documents, update KYC information or complete certain loan-related formalities should try to finish these tasks before September 11.
Use UPI and Digital Banking
For routine payments and money transfers, customers can rely on UPI, mobile banking and internet banking. These services are expected to remain operational during the strike and subsequent holidays.

Keep Cash Ready for the Weekend
Those who know they will require physical cash over the weekend should consider withdrawing it beforehand. Although ATMs are expected to function, customers should avoid leaving cash requirements until the last moment.
Plan Cheque Transactions Carefully
Customers dealing with cheque deposits or clearances should account for potential delays. Branch closures and disruptions in related banking operations could affect processing timelines.
Use Customer Service Points
SBI has also advised customers to use Customer Service Points (CSPs) for eligible banking requirements during the strike period. These centres may provide access to certain basic banking services.
More Bank Strikes Planned Ahead
The bank strike September 11 is reportedly part of a wider series of industrial actions planned by bank unions. Further strikes have been announced for September 28, 29 and 30, followed by a continuous strike beginning October 26, 2026.
Banks have indicated that arrangements will be made to reduce the impact on customers. Nevertheless, branch-level services may be affected whenever employees participate in the announced strikes.
For customers with time-sensitive banking work, the best approach is to plan ahead. Completing important branch transactions before the bank strike September 11, using digital banking wherever possible and keeping track of upcoming strike and holiday dates can help avoid unnecessary delays.
With the bank strike September 11 followed by the second Saturday and Sunday, customers should make arrangements in advance rather than waiting for branches to reopen on the next working day.
