The Pakistan U-19 team became the centre of an unusual controversy during its ongoing tour of England after the young cricketers were reportedly mistaken for a group of asylum seekers. The misunderstanding led to a protest outside the Marriott Hotel in Portsmouth, where the visiting squad was staying.
The situation was eventually brought under control after it was established that the group staying at the hotel was actually the Pakistan U-19 team, which is in England for a series against the hosts.
Protesters Gather Outside Portsmouth Hotel
A group of protesters reportedly gathered outside the Portsmouth hotel after seeing a coach carrying around 40 foreign men arrive at the property. The incident was linked to concerns among some local residents amid heightened attention around asylum-related issues.
Reform councillor George Madgwick contacted the hotel and spoke with members of the visiting Pakistan side. He subsequently went outside and informed the protesters that they had mistaken the group for asylum seekers and that they were actually a cricket team.
Madgwick described the episode as an unfortunate misunderstanding. According to him, the protesters left shortly after being informed about the identity of the visitors.

ECB Reviewing Security Arrangements
The incident has prompted the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) to review the security arrangements surrounding the Pakistan U-19 team during its England tour.
The ECB has also been in contact with Pakistan’s team management following the incident. The review is expected to assess whether additional measures are required to ensure the safety and smooth movement of the young cricketers during the remainder of their stay.
Pakistan U-19 Team Has Had Mixed Results on Tour
On the cricketing front, the Pakistan U-19 team has already played against England Under-19 in both a Youth Test and an ODI.
The four-day Youth Test was played in Arundel from September 2 to 5. England Under-19 narrowly defeated Pakistan by 10 runs in a closely fought contest.
Pakistan responded strongly in the first Youth ODI on September 9. The visitors produced a dominant performance and defeated England Under-19 by 177 runs, giving the young side a major boost during the tour.
Senior Pakistan Team Also Under Pressure
While the Pakistan U-19 team is dealing with an off-field controversy, the country’s senior side is facing a difficult period in its Test series against England.
Pakistan lost the first two Tests of the series. In the third Test at Edgbaston, the team was dismissed for just 133 runs in its first innings, putting further pressure on the batting unit.
Following the second Test at Lord’s, Pakistan made several significant changes to its squad. The team reportedly made seven changes and also parted ways with head coach Sarfaraz Ahmed and bowling coach Umar Gul.
