Bareilly City Magistrate Alankar Agnihotri suspended by UP government after Republic Day resignation. Investigation initiated amid claims of administrative pressure and UGC rule disputes.
In a major administrative development from Bareilly, City Magistrate Alankar Agnihotri has been suspended by the Yogi Adityanath-led Uttar Pradesh government after submitting his resignation on Republic Day. Agnihotri had expressed his dissatisfaction with certain government policies and took the unprecedented step of stepping down on January 26.
The suspension comes amid claims by Agnihotri that he faced undue pressure and harassment from district administration officials. During the suspension period, he will remain attached to the DM office in Shamli, while the Divisional Commissioner of Bareilly conducts a formal investigation into the matter.
Vacating Government Residence
Following the resignation, Agnihotri vacated his official residence. He mentioned that he had been called for discussions by the District Magistrate, but the circumstances surrounding the resignation left him with no choice.
Support from Shankaracharya Avimukteshwaranand
After his suspension, Shankaracharya Avimukteshwaranand personally called Agnihotri to express support. The spiritual leader said that what happened to Agnihotri was unjust and that his dedication to public service and Sanatan Dharma has earned him recognition from the larger community. He assured Agnihotri that greater responsibilities in the service of society and religion await him.

Reasons Behind Resignation
Agnihotri, a PCS officer of the 2019 batch, cited issues with new rules introduced by the University Grants Commission (UGC) and related matters involving Shankaracharya Avimukteshwaranand as key reasons for his resignation. He labeled the UGC regulations as “black laws” that were harming the academic environment in colleges and universities.
The UGC guidelines were aimed at preventing caste-based discrimination in educational institutions by creating special committees, helplines, and monitoring teams to address grievances of students from Scheduled Castes (SC), Scheduled Tribes (ST), and Other Backward Classes (OBC). Agnihotri expressed strong objections, claiming the rules were counterproductive.
Political Reactions and Administrative Pressure
Agnihotri sent his resignation via email to the Governor of Uttar Pradesh and the Bareilly District Magistrate, Avinash Singh. Local leaders have described his resignation as a sign of administrative pressure. Bareilly Mayor Dr. Umesh Gautam visited Agnihotri’s residence to show support.
In his resignation statement, Agnihotri highlighted that when government policies divide society and the nation, officials must stand up to ensure justice and fairness. Originally from Kanpur Nagar, Agnihotri has previously served as SDM in Unnao, Balrampur, and Lucknow, and is recognized in administrative circles for his strict work ethic and clear, uncompromising views.
