The Punjab government has announced a major policy decision aimed at controlling rising education costs in the state. Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann stated that the government will soon introduce a strict rule known as the Punjab private school fee cap, designed to prevent private schools from increasing fees beyond a fixed limit.
Punjab Private School Fee Cap to Limit Annual Fee Hikes to 5 Percent
Under the proposed policy, the Punjab private school fee cap will restrict private schools from raising their annual fees by more than 5 percent. The government said this step is necessary to protect parents from sudden and excessive financial burden caused by frequent fee hikes.
Private School Fee Cap to Cover All Mandatory School Charges
Officials clarified that the Punjab private school fee cap will not apply only to tuition fees but will also include all compulsory charges collected by schools. This includes development fees, activity charges, and other mandatory contributions, ensuring complete transparency in school billing structures.

As part of the proposed regulation, schools that have increased fees by more than 15 percent over the last three years may be required to refund the excess amount to parents. The government is planning to enforce the Punjab private school fee cap through an upcoming ordinance, making the rule legally binding across the state.

Private School Fee Cap Aims to Ensure Affordable Education
The government has described the decision as a strong step against what it calls unfair fee practices in private education. The Punjab private school fee cap is expected to bring long-term relief to parents and improve accountability among private schools.
Private School Fee Cap Could Set a National Example
If successfully implemented, the private school fee cap could become one of the strictest education fee control policies in India, potentially serving as a model for other states facing similar concerns over rising private school fees.
