The Significance of Bhratri Dwitiya

A tale known as The God of Death and Justice states that on the day of Bhratri Dwitiya, Yamraj pays a yearly visit to his sister Yamuna. To celebrate this Bhai Dooj, the sister first must make a plate of aarti for her brother that includes of the following items: coconut, batashe, sweets, fruits, paan, roli, kumkum and rice.
The sister needs to light a lamp on the plate after it has been prepared.
Next, the sister should put “Tilak” made with kumkum and rice on her brother’s forehead and performs the aarti for her brother.

Legend One

His sister greeted him with joy. When Yamduta arrived, Yamuna made aarti, put a Tilak on his forehead, and cooked some delectable food.
Yamduta bestowed upon her a boon upon her upon witnessing the warm reception she received, which states that a brother is bestowed with money and health on this day each time he visits his sister. Thus, another name for this day is “Yam-Dwitiya.”

In a different tale, Lord Krishna visited his sister Subhadra after defeating the demon king Narakasura. It was Bhratri Dwitiya’s day. With great affection, Subhadra greeted Lord Krishna and threw a tilak on his forehead as a sign of sisterly protection.
