BJP is turning Delhi into a ‘cancer capital’ by creating new garbage mountains and contaminating groundwater, alleges AAP Delhi president Saurabh Bharadwaj, raising serious public health concerns.
New Delhi: Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) Delhi President Saurabh Bharadwaj has launched a fierce attack on the BJP-led administration, accusing it of endangering public health by creating fresh garbage dumping zones across the capital. He claimed that the continuous dumping of waste is polluting groundwater and pushing Delhi toward becoming India’s “cancer capital.”
Speaking at a press briefing, Bharadwaj alleged that massive quantities of waste from the Bhalswa landfill are being transported and dumped in Kirari, a densely populated area largely inhabited by economically weaker communities. According to him, the move has exposed residents to hazardous chemicals and plastic waste, increasing the risk of severe diseases, including cancer.
Groundwater at Risk Due to Toxic Waste
Bharadwaj explained that plastic, polythene, and chemical-heavy waste is slowly contaminating soil, air, and underground water sources. He warned that tube-well water in nearby areas could become toxic, affecting thousands of families who depend on it for daily consumption.
“When rainwater seeps through these waste layers, it forms leachate that permanently damages groundwater quality. Once polluted, the water becomes unsafe for human use,” he said.
BJP Accused of Misleading the Public
The AAP leader accused the BJP of shifting garbage from one location to another to create an illusion of waste reduction at the Bhalswa landfill. He said this relocation does not solve the problem but simply transfers environmental risks to new neighborhoods.

He also criticized the BJP’s long tenure in the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD), stating that years of poor waste management resulted in the creation of multiple landfill “mountains” that continue to threaten public health.
Unlivable Conditions in Kirari
Sharing details from a recent site visit, Bharadwaj described unbearable stench, constant dust in the air, and severe eye and throat irritation in the Kirari region. He said that even short exposure caused discomfort, raising concerns about how local residents manage to live in such conditions daily.
He added that several feet-thick layers of mixed waste are visible across the area, and in some locations, garbage mounds resemble artificial hills.
Call for Scientific Investigation
Bharadwaj urged environmental experts and scientists to assess the situation and evaluate the long-term health consequences. He emphasized that exposure to toxic waste could trigger respiratory disorders, waterborne illnesses, and cancer cases in the coming years.
“This is not just an environmental issue; it is a serious public health emergency,” he stated.
Strong Warning to the Government
The AAP leader accused the ruling administration of prioritizing political image-building over citizens’ safety. He alleged that similar negligence had been seen earlier in cases related to air pollution and river pollution.
Concluding his remarks, Bharadwaj warned that if corrective action is not taken immediately, Delhi could face irreversible environmental damage and long-term health crises for future generations.
