Haryana CM Nayab Singh Saini has directed all Deputy Commissioners to ensure the desilting of drains and canals in their respective areas to prevent waterlogging during the upcoming monsoon season.
Chairing the 56th meeting of the Haryana State Drought Relief and Flood Control Board, the Chief Minister emphasized the need to strengthen flood control measures by constructing stone studs, stone steining, remodeling drains, building permanent pump houses, and laying pipelines in low-lying areas. He also stressed the importance of reviewing existing flood control structures, directing officials to inspect stone studs and take strict action against any negligence. An online portal will be created for monitoring these structures.
Additionally, he ordered the desilting and repair of major canals, ensuring equitable development across all regions. The board approved 352 flood control schemes worth ₹657.99 crore, with short-term projects to be completed by June 30 and medium- to long-term projects reviewed in May.
CM Saini also issued strict instructions to prevent the discharge of sewage water into the Yamuna River. He directed officials in Panipat, Sonipat, Palwal, and Yamunanagar to establish sewage treatment plants (STPs) and ensure the maintenance of existing STPs, particularly at Masani Barrage in Rewari.
He further suggested awareness drives to encourage farmers to shift from water-intensive paddy cultivation to alternative crops, proposing the creation of Zero Paddy areas. Panchayats making significant progress in this initiative will be recognized and rewarded.
Senior officials, including Chief Secretary Anurag Rastogi, Additional Chief Secretary (Home) Sumita Misra, and Principal Secretary to CM Arun Kumar Gupta, attended the meeting.
