On the auspicious occasion of Makar Sankranti, Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath visited Gorakhpur and offered a ceremonial khichdi to Mahayogi Guru Gorakhnath, following the unique Nath tradition. The event was held early Thursday morning at 4 AM at the Gorakhnath Temple, where the CM prayed for the welfare, prosperity, and happiness of all citizens.
After performing the ritual, CM Yogi Adityanath extended heartfelt greetings and best wishes to all devotees, saints, and citizens on the festival of Makar Sankranti. Speaking to the media, he highlighted that since Wednesday, millions of devotees across Uttar Pradesh have been visiting sacred sites to express their faith and devotion.
Millions of Devotees Participate in Rituals
The Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath noted that large crowds in Gorakhpur offered devotional khichdi to Lord Gorakhnath, while devotees in Prayagraj took holy dips at the confluence of the Ganga, Yamuna, and Saraswati rivers. He emphasized that the tradition continued throughout Thursday, reflecting the deep-rooted spiritual culture of the region.
“It is my privilege to offer khichdi to Lord Gorakhnath after the special early morning ritual. Devotees from across the state have gathered here in huge numbers to participate in this sacred tradition,” CM Yogi said.

Significance of Makar Sankranti
CM Yogi Adityanath explained that Makar Sankranti is one of India’s most significant festivals, symbolizing the Sun God’s transition from Sagittarius (Dhanu Rashi) to Capricorn (Makara Rashi). The festival marks Uttarayan, a period when days grow longer and nights shorter, bringing vitality and positivity. He added that Makar Sankranti is celebrated in various forms across India, including Bihu or Tilwa Sankranti in the east, Lohri in the west, Pongal in the south, and Khichdi Sankranti in the north.
“The Sun God is considered the soul of the universe. Worshiping the Sun during this period is auspicious for starting all types of positive and sacred activities,” the CM Yogi Adityanath said.
Devotional Spirit at Gorakhpur and Prayagraj
While devotees at Gorakhpur expressed their faith by offering khichdi to Lord Gorakhnath, those in Prayagraj participated in spiritual rituals at the sacred Sangam, accompanied by revered saints and the presence of deities including Lord Benimadhav, Prayag Dev, and the river goddesses Ganga, Yamuna, and Saraswati.
CM Yogi Adityanath concluded by wishing all citizens peace, prosperity, and divine blessings on the festival, emphasizing the unity of cultural and spiritual traditions that Makar Sankranti represents.
