UP CM Yogi Adityanath criticizes SP MLAs over the codeine syrup controversy in the Assembly. 79 cases filed, 78 arrests made, and 134 raids conducted. Learn the latest updates.
In a stern address to the Uttar Pradesh Assembly, Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath took a tough stance on the ongoing codeine syrup controversy. The CM emphasized that the syrup should only be consumed under strict medical supervision, especially by children, and criticized the Samajwadi Party (SP) MLAs for making remarks on the issue.
Addressing the Assembly, CM Yogi said, “Without proper medical advice, no one should consume codeine syrup. Adults take it only after a doctor’s recommendation, and children especially need supervision. As for SP MLAs, since you have little to do with studies or awareness, you often make such statements.”

What Has Happened So Far in the Codeine Syrup Case?
The Chief Minister shared that the government has filed 79 cases so far, with 225 accused named, and 78 arrests made. Additionally, 134 raids have been conducted across the state. He pointed out that investigations indicate connections to Samajwadi Party-linked individuals in several instances.
CM Yogi further said, “Illegal transactions have been traced to accounts of an SP Lohia Vahini office-bearer. The STF is investigating. This case should fall under the NDPS Act. The Uttar Pradesh government has fought this issue decisively, and no criminal will be spared. Be assured, bulldozer action is also ready if needed.”
Opposition Raises Questions
At the beginning of the session during the Question Hour, Leader of Opposition and SP leader Mata Prasad Pandey raised concerns over the syrup issue, stating that the problem has spread like a network across Uttar Pradesh. He also claimed that WHO has taken note of it, and highlighted the severe consequences, including children’s deaths and a multi-crore black market.
However, Parliamentary Affairs Minister Suresh Kumar Khanna denied these claims, stating that there have been no reported deaths due to codeine syrup in UP.
