Delhi Assembly Winter Session extended after repeated disruptions as AAP and BJP trade accusations. Speaker orders forensic probe into viral video; Atishi’s absence raises controversy.
The Winter Session of the Delhi Assembly witnessed continuous chaos on its fourth day as proceedings were disrupted multiple times due to heated exchanges between the ruling BJP and opposition Aam Aadmi Party (AAP). Amid the uproar, the Speaker of the House decided to extend the session by one day to Friday, following four adjournments in a single day.
The fourth day of the session saw members from both parties engaging in constant allegations and shouting, making it difficult to conduct the proceedings. The absence of Leader of Opposition Atishi for the second consecutive day drew sharp criticism from Speaker Vijender Gupta, who instructed officials to clarify the situation and maintain decorum in the House.
Allegations Over Fake Video and Social Media Controversy
The AAP accused BJP Minister Kapil Mishra of manipulating statements of the Leader of Opposition in a video and circulating it on social media. The opposition demanded the minister’s disqualification, calling the act a breach of Assembly decorum.
In response, Speaker Gupta ordered a forensic investigation into the viral video to ascertain its authenticity. The findings are expected to be submitted within 15 days. Additionally, the Privileges Committee has been instructed to probe allegations against AAP MLA Jarnail Singh for using objectionable language against the Speaker on social media, following a complaint by MLA Harish Khurana.

Session Extension Amid Public Issues Neglected
In view of the ongoing disruptions, the Speaker extended the Winter Session by one day, adjourning it until 11 AM Friday. Critics point out that despite the extension, meaningful debates are unlikely to occur as the session so far has largely been dominated by political theatrics. Key public issues such as pollution, education, governance, and finance have largely been neglected, with only the Court Fee Waiver Amendment Bill passed.
Speaker Criticizes Opposition Leader Atishi
The Speaker expressed concern over Atishi’s repeated absence, questioning her understanding of the session’s seriousness. This absenteeism, he noted, hampers productive discussions on critical public matters.
BJP and AAP Trade Accusations Over Gurus’ Remarks
BJP Minister Kapil Mishra accused Atishi of disrespecting Sikh Gurus, claiming her absence from the Assembly was an attempt to evade accountability. In contrast, AAP state convener Saurabh Bhardwaj countered that BJP had dishonored Gurus by manipulating the video and that their politics were being exposed in the Assembly.
The Delhi Assembly’s Winter Session has so far seen minimal legislative progress, with disruptions overshadowing debates on pressing issues. All eyes are now on Friday’s proceedings to see if the session can finally focus on governance rather than political bickering.
