Delhi Assembly Winter Session turns chaotic as four AAP MLAs suspended for disrupting LG VK Saxena’s speech. Pollution issue fuels protest.
The Delhi Assembly Winter Session began on a turbulent note on Monday, with sharp confrontations between the ruling BJP and the opposition Aam Aadmi Party (AAP). During the first day of the four-day session, four AAP legislators were suspended after they disrupted proceedings during Lieutenant Governor VK Saxena’s address.
The Winter Session, scheduled to continue until January 8, witnessed repeated sloganeering by AAP MLAs, forcing the Speaker to take disciplinary action. The suspended legislators will now remain barred from Delhi Assembly proceedings for the next three days.
AAP MLAs Protest Wearing Masks Over Pollution Issue
Ahead of the session, AAP legislators, led by former Delhi Chief Minister Atishi, arrived at the Delhi Assembly wearing masks to highlight the city’s worsening air pollution. The party accused the Rekha Gupta-led BJP government of failing to control pollution despite making pre-election promises of cleaner air during winter months.
The protest continued outside the Delhi Assembly premises, where AAP leaders claimed that pollution would remain the central issue during the Winter Session. They also alleged manipulation of Air Quality Index (AQI) data by the state government.
Disruption During LG’s Address
The situation escalated inside the House when LG VK Saxena began his address. AAP legislators resumed sloganeering, prompting Speaker Vijender Gupta to intervene. Despite repeated warnings, the disruption continued, leading the Speaker to order the marshals to remove AAP MLAs Sanjeev Jha, Kuldeep Kumar, Somdutt, and Jarnail Singh from the House.
Following this, Delhi PWD Minister Pravesh Verma moved a condemnation motion, seeking their suspension. The Speaker approved the motion, suspending the four MLAs from the Assembly until January 8.

BJP–AAP Tensions Continue
Political tensions between the BJP and AAP have remained high since the BJP returned to power in Delhi after nearly 27 years in February last year. Similar scenes of disruption were witnessed during previous Delhi Assembly sessions, where several AAP legislators were also suspended for unruly conduct.
This time as well, the first day of the Winter Session reflected the ongoing political standoff between the two parties.
CM Rekha Gupta Calls for Constructive Debate
Before the session began, Chief Minister Rekha Gupta urged both the government and the opposition to act responsibly and ensure meaningful discussions inside the House. She emphasized that legislators should raise constituency-specific issues instead of indulging in confrontations.
Meanwhile, Cabinet Minister Manjinder Singh Sirsa stated that the current government had achieved several milestones in just 11 months, claiming these accomplishments surpassed what the AAP government achieved over the past 11 years.
What Lies Ahead in the Winter Session
The remaining days of the Delhi Assembly Winter Session are expected to be equally intense. On Monday, the Delhi government is set to table three Comptroller and Auditor General (CAG) reports. These reports pertain to the renovation of former Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal’s official residence, the Delhi Jal Board, and universities run under the previous AAP government.
With AAP focusing on pollution and the BJP pushing governance-related reports, sharp debates and political confrontations are likely to dominate the Delhi Assembly proceedings in the coming days.
