Delhi CM Rekha Gupta warns DMRC against pollution caused by metro construction. CM orders strict dust-control measures, waste removal, and ensures environmental safety at all ongoing sites.
Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta has issued a stern warning to the Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) over pollution concerns linked to ongoing metro construction projects. The CM emphasized that under no circumstances should Metro construction activities contribute to pollution in the city and instructed officials to ensure strict compliance with environmental safety standards.
During a high-level review meeting attended by DMRC officials, Transport Minister Pankaj Kumar Singh, Chief Secretary Rajeev Verma, and representatives from various city departments, CM Gupta expressed strong displeasure over repeated complaints from citizens regarding dust, debris, and garbage accumulation at metro construction sites.
“Government departments are working on a war footing to curb pollution. Any negligence by agencies like DMRC will not be tolerated,” said CM Gupta. She further added that she plans to visit ongoing metro construction sites personally, and stringent action will be taken against any lapses observed.
Issues Highlighted by the Chief Minister
CM Gupta noted that heavy dust from construction sites has been affecting nearby residential areas and roads. Citizens have reported that even after Metro construction work is completed, roads and footpaths remain unrepaired, causing traffic congestion and increasing pollution levels. Additionally, heaps of garbage under elevated Metro corridors were observed, reflecting negligence in maintaining cleanliness and infrastructure.

Directives to DMRC
The Chief Minister directed DMRC officials to implement modern dust-control technologies across all ongoing construction sites. Key instructions included:
-
Ensuring covered storage for all construction materials.
-
Conducting regular water sprinkling to control dust.
-
Removing debris and waste from beneath elevated corridors.
-
Maintaining cleanliness under elevated Metro routes and in adjoining areas.
DMRC officials informed the CM that measures such as dust-control systems and waste clearing under elevated structures have already begun. They also confirmed that in some areas, even where maintenance falls under other departments, the Metro is actively taking responsibility for cleanliness.
Focus on Accountability and Environmental Safety
CM Rekha Gupta’s warning reinforces the government’s commitment to maintaining air quality and reducing construction-related pollution in Delhi. The emphasis on strict monitoring and the personal involvement of the CM ensures that agencies like DMRC prioritize environmental safety alongside infrastructure development.
