Anjali Birla’s Defamation Case: Delhi High Court Orders X and Google to Remove False Posts
New Delhi: The Delhi High Court on Tuesday closed the defamation suit filed by Anjali Birla, daughter of Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla, against social media platforms over posts accusing her of clearing the UPSC exam in her first attempt through corrupt means.
Delhi High Court Orders Removal of Defamatory Content
The High Court, presided over by Justice Jyoti Singh, reviewed submissions from social media platform X (formerly Twitter), which confirmed that 12 out of the 16 disputed posts had been voluntarily removed by their creators. Access to the remaining four posts was restricted.
In its final order, the Delhi High Court directed the complete removal of these four posts and instructed X to promptly delete any additional defamatory content reported by Anjali Birla. Google was also ordered to remove a previously blocked post.
Legal Battle Over Defamatory Allegations
Anjali Birla, an Indian Railway Personnel Service (IRPS) officer, had filed the defamation suit in July 2023 after several social media posts falsely alleged that she cleared the UPSC Civil Services Examination in her first attempt due to her father’s influence.
The Delhi High Court had previously directed Google Inc. and X Corp to remove posts or content falsely linking Anjali’s success in the UPSC exam to political connections. The court also prohibited unidentified defendants from making further defamatory statements regarding the matter.
Anjali Birla’s Stand on Defamatory Claims
In her plea, Anjali Birla emphasized that the defamatory posts were baseless and aimed to damage her professional reputation. She argued that these false narratives were being circulated with the intent to malign her image and discredit her achievements.
The defamation suit highlighted that the posts were deliberately designed to mislead the public, falsely suggesting that her father’s position as the Speaker of the Lok Sabha had influenced her success in the UPSC exam.
Delhi High Court’s Directive to Social Media Platforms
The Delhi High Court’s decision reinforced the accountability of social media platforms in addressing defamatory content. By ordering the removal of specific posts and ensuring further action against defamatory content, the court underscored the importance of maintaining the integrity of online platforms.
This ruling offers relief to Anjali Birla and reaffirms the Delhi High Court’s commitment to protecting individuals from false and defamatory online narratives.
