The Delhi government has confirmed that its strict “No PUC, No Fuel” policy will remain in effect even after the relaxation of GRAP-IV pollution restrictions, reinforcing its commitment to combating air pollution in the national capital.
Environment Minister Confirms Continuation of Anti-Pollution Measures
Delhi Environment Minister Manjinder Singh Sirsa stated that vehicles without a valid Pollution Under Control (PUC) certificate will not be allowed to refuel or operate in the city, despite the easing of emergency pollution curbs. The policy, implemented on December 18, has been a key tool in controlling vehicle emissions during the peak pollution period.
₹100 Crore Allocated for Water Body Rejuvenation
In addition to the anti-pollution push, the Delhi government has allocated ₹100 crore for the restoration and rejuvenation of water bodies across the city. Sirsa emphasized that these measures are part of a larger strategy to improve Delhi’s overall environmental health.
PUC Centres Under Scrutiny
Inspections revealed several PUC centres operating with faulty or non-functional equipment. Twelve centres were found using defective tools and have been suspended, with notices issued to the operators. Sirsa warned that strict action against violations will continue to ensure compliance.
Delhi’s Air Quality and Fog Disrupt Transport
Meanwhile, Delhi’s air quality index (AQI) climbed back into the ‘severe’ category, registering 415 at 3 PM. Dense fog has disrupted transportation, reducing visibility to just 50 metres at Palam and Safdarjung and causing delays for over 200 flights at Indira Gandhi International Airport. Several train services were also affected.
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has forecast maximum temperatures around 22°C and minimum temperatures near 9°C for the coming days. Partly cloudy skies with persistent morning fog are expected to continue, although no colour-coded weather warnings have been issued for the capital.
Delhi’s “No PUC, No Fuel” policy, alongside initiatives for water body rejuvenation and stricter PUC centre monitoring, signals the government’s determination to tackle air pollution and protect public health.
