Delhi government to install 305 mist sprayers at nine pollution hotspots to reduce dust and smog. CM Rekha Gupta outlines steps to improve air quality and fight pollution.
The Delhi government has unveiled a major initiative to tackle air pollution by installing 305 mist sprayers across nine pollution hotspots in the city, Chief Minister Rekha Gupta announced on Thursday. The project aims to reduce dust, particulate matter, and smog while complementing ongoing efforts such as road repairs and urban greenery.
Mist Sprayers to Target Pollution Hotspots
During her inspection at ITO, one of Delhi’s busiest and most pollution-prone areas, CM Rekha Gupta confirmed that the installation of mist sprayers is already underway. “We are preparing an extensive plan to cover all major roads in Delhi with mist spray machines. The 35 poles fitted with mist sprayers at ITO are already showing positive results,” Gupta said.
Mist sprayer technology works by releasing fine water droplets into the air, which bind with dust particles, soot, and particulate matter (PM2.5 and PM10). This process helps pollutants clump together and settle on the ground, effectively reducing airborne dust and smog. The mist also provides a slight cooling effect, improving air comfort in congested areas.

Positive Results and Expansion Plans
Trials conducted in select New Delhi Municipal Council (NDMC) areas have demonstrated significant improvements in air quality, prompting the government to expand the initiative across the city. Alongside mist sprayers, a high-level expert committee comprising officials, IIT specialists, and environmental experts will provide guidance on additional pollution-control measures.
Complementary Steps to Reduce Pollution
CM Gupta also highlighted other initiatives aimed at curbing pollution:
Road repairs and pothole management by departments such as PWD, DSIIDC, and DDA.
Planting foliage on road dividers and traffic islands to act as natural dust absorbers.
Community participation, including urging residents to report potholes via government portals.
Recommendations for resident welfare associations (RWAs) to provide electric heaters for security guards to prevent biomass burning during winters, a common contributor to pollution.
A Vision for Cleaner Air in Delhi
The combination of mist sprayers, infrastructure improvements, greenery, and community involvement is expected to bring a significant improvement in Delhi’s air quality. CM Rekha Gupta reiterated the government’s commitment to creating a healthier environment for the city’s residents and reducing pollution levels across Delhi.
