Delhi government plans to spend ₹17,000 crore to strengthen power infrastructure. CM Rekha Gupta unveils roadmap for reliable, sustainable, and high-quality electricity across the city by 2029.
The Delhi government has announced a major initiative to strengthen the city’s electricity transmission and distribution network, with a total investment of around ₹17,000 crore over the next three years. Chief Minister Rekha Gupta emphasized that a robust, self-reliant, and environmentally sustainable power system is essential for the capital’s growing energy needs.
Delhi’s Power Challenges and Government Plan
Delhi’s electricity demand has been rising rapidly, with peak consumption reaching approximately 8,400 MW in 2025. The increase is driven by population growth, higher use of air conditioners and electrical appliances, and the rising number of electric vehicles. Authorities project that by 2030, peak demand could reach 11,500–12,000 MW, and by 2040, it may touch 19,000–20,000 MW.
To meet this growing demand, the Delhi government has prepared a comprehensive roadmap to make power supply more reliable, secure, and future-ready. The plan includes strengthening transmission lines, building new grid substations, and upgrading the distribution network. CM Rekha Gupta stressed that this investment is not just to increase capacity but to ensure uninterrupted, high-quality electricity across all areas of Delhi, even during peak summer months.

Focus on Renewable Energy and Modern Technology
The government also announced measures to promote clean energy. Rooftop solar panels will be installed on government buildings, and the Prime Minister’s “Surya Ghar Free Electricity Scheme” will be accelerated. Solar power will be prioritized on underutilized lands and agricultural plots, helping reduce dependence on conventional energy sources. The Chief Minister instructed DISCOMs and Delhi Transco Limited (DTL) to explore innovative solutions for placing electricity infrastructure under flyovers and other suitable locations.
To ensure minimal disruption during outages, advanced restoration techniques will be adopted. Distribution systems across all assembly constituencies will be upgraded, and the latest technology will be implemented for a consumer-centric, durable, and reliable electricity network. CM Gupta emphasized collaboration between agencies to complete all projects on time and meet Delhi’s energy demands not only today but for decades to come.
Delhi’s Vision: Reliable and Sustainable Power Supply
The Delhi government aims to transform the city’s electricity system into a model of reliability, sustainability, and efficiency. By investing ₹17,000 crore over three years, the city is set to strengthen its transmission and distribution networks, enhance grid capacity, and integrate renewable energy sources to meet both present and future power requirements.
