Delhi CM Rekha Gupta performs Arghya at Yamuna Ghats as thousands celebrate Chhath Puja 2025. BJP leaders join grand festivities across the capital.
Delhi celebrated Chhath Puja with grandeur this year, as Chief Minister Rekha Gupta, along with prominent BJP leaders, participated in rituals along the banks of the Yamuna River. The festival, observed by the Purvanchali community, saw large-scale arrangements and enthusiastic participation from devotees across the city.
CM Rekha Gupta visited the Chhath Puja, Chhath Ghats in Manglopuri and Sonia Vihar, accompanied by Delhi BJP President Virendra Sachdeva, northwest Delhi MP Yogender Chandolia, MP Manoj Tiwari, and Delhi Culture Minister Kapil Mishra. During her visit, she performed the traditional “Arghya” offering to the Sun God, both at sunrise and sunset, and extended greetings to Delhi residents.
Highlighting the significance of the celebration, CM Gupta said, “This splendour, grandness, and divinity of Chhath being celebrated now is providing succour to the Delhi people. I pray to Chhati Maiya for the prosperity and happiness of Delhi.” She emphasized that the festival is being celebrated on the Yamuna banks after several years, following restrictions under the previous administration.
The Delhi government has made extensive preparations to facilitate the festival for the Purvanchali community, which constitutes nearly 40% of the city’s population. Ghats were set up at 17 points along the Yamuna, from Palla to Kalindikunj, alongside 1,500 temporary ghats in parks and public spaces across the capital.

CM Gupta expressed her joy at witnessing devotees celebrate the festival in the city: “It was a unique experience. I cannot put into words the joy I felt seeing happiness on the faces of devotees. Those who used to travel to their villages for Chhath could now perform rituals here.”
Addressing criticism from AAP leaders regarding Yamuna’s water quality and festival arrangements, she stated, “Some tried to politicize Chhath, but the response of the people reflected their happiness with the grand celebrations. Not just Delhi, but people from across the country witnessed the magnificence of Chhath in the capital this year.”
Apart from the Chief Minister, several BJP leaders and ministers, including West Delhi MP Kamaljeet Sehrawat, Chandni Chowk MP Praveen Khandelwal, and Delhi PWD Minister Parvesh Verma, actively participated in the festivities. Minister Verma also constructed a private ghat at his residence to enable residents in space-constrained areas to celebrate the festival.
Thousands of devotees from Bihar, Eastern Uttar Pradesh, and Jharkhand gathered at the government-prepared ghats to offer “Arghya” to the setting Sun. The three-day festival in Delhi will conclude with the early morning ritual of offering “Arghya” to the rising Sun.
The celebrations this year have been widely praised for their organization, scale, and adherence to tradition, highlighting the cultural diversity and vibrancy of Delhi.
