Deluges trigger flooding in Delhi-NCR
Heavy rains early on Friday triggered waterlogging throughout the Delhi-National Capital Region (NCR) and partially collapsed the ceiling of Delhi Airport’s Terminal 1.
Starting at roughly three in the morning, the Safdarjung weather station recorded 153.7 mm of rainfall. The India Meteorological Department classifies rainfall as heavy when it exceeds 124.5 mm and reaches up to 244.4 mm per day.
Social media users shared images and videos of stalled cars in flooded streets as well as scenes of heavy traffic.
Because of the persistently high rainfall, the Lodhi Estate region has severe waterlogging that makes it difficult for cars to travel. Outside the home of Samajwadi Party MP Ram Gopal Yadav, where MPs and Union Ministers live, the situation is very difficult.
Following many days of intense rain, Gurugram too saw significant waterlogging in a number of places. Images from Sheetla Mata Road showed commuters having serious problems.
Affected flight operations
A ceiling fall at Delhi Airport’s Terminal 1 on Friday morning caused disruptions to airline operations, including those of IndiGo and SpiceJet. There were one fatality and over five injuries as a result of the incident.
In response, the airline sent out a press release informing travelers that a number of flights had been canceled because of bad weather and structural damage to Terminal 1. It was suggested that passengers check and confirm the status of their aircraft.
Following the ceiling collapse at Delhi Airport Terminal 1, traffic from Indira Gandhi International Airport headed towards T1 departures has been redirected at the CISF check post towards T1 arrivals, according to a statement released by Delhi Police.
A fire official reported on Friday that at Delhi Airport’s Terminal 1, multiple cars were hit by collapsing roof components. About three fire tenders were on the site as soon as they received the alert.
