Dr. Karan Barot accuses BJP and Congress of weakening AAP and pressuring candidates during the Gandhinagar civic election.
Aam Aadmi Party Gujarat chief spokesperson and State Organisation Minister Dr. Karan Barot has accused the BJP and Congress of allegedly working to prevent third political parties and local leadership from gaining strength in Gujarat and across the country.
According to Dr. Karan Barot, established political parties do not want an alternative political force to emerge and establish a strong connection with voters. He alleged that whenever a regional or third party begins gaining political ground, attempts are made to weaken it through political pressure and other means.
AAP Raises Questions Over Gandhinagar Civic Election
Speaking about the Gandhinagar Municipal Corporation election, Dr. Karan Barot alleged that efforts were made to prevent AAP candidates from contesting the election effectively.
He claimed that attempts were made to stop some candidates from filing their nomination papers and that pressure was subsequently allegedly used to make certain candidates withdraw their forms. He further alleged that reports about AAP candidates leaving the party or the organisation becoming weak were then highlighted to create an impression that the party was losing its political strength.
AAP has been actively preparing for the Gandhinagar civic polls, announcing candidate lists and holding a major nomination rally in September. The party said it had announced 29 candidates by September 24.
Allegations of Pressure Over Party Events
Dr. Karan Barot also alleged that AAP faced difficulties while organising public meetings and communication programmes. He claimed that venues booked for party events were cancelled and that electricity and other arrangements were allegedly disrupted.
He further alleged that some venue owners were pressured or threatened. These claims have been made by AAP and should be viewed as allegations by the party.
The Gandhinagar civic election has already witnessed competing allegations from opposition parties. AAP and Congress have accused the BJP of misusing government machinery and police, while the BJP has rejected such allegations as baseless.

AAP Says Its Campaign Is Being Targeted
The AAP leader further alleged that party posters and banners put up during the night were removed by morning. He also claimed that campaign workers had received threats.
According to Dr. Karan Barot, the alleged pressure is linked to AAP’s positioning as a party that seeks to bring ordinary people into politics rather than relying solely on established political families.
He cited Gujarat AAP leaders such as Gopal Italia, Chaitar Vasava and Isudan Gadhvi as examples of leaders who, according to him, came from ordinary backgrounds and subsequently established themselves in public life.
‘Third Political Force’ Debate Intensifies
The allegations come at a time when AAP is attempting to strengthen its organisational presence in Gujarat’s local elections. The party has described its Gandhinagar campaign as an effort to provide voters with an alternative political option.
AAP has also released a 14-point guarantee letter for Gandhinagar covering issues including education, healthcare, water supply, employment, transport, sanitation, public facilities and transparency.
Dr. Karan Barot Appeals to Gandhinagar Voters
Dr. Karan Barot appealed to voters in Gandhinagar and Gujarat to look beyond the traditional BJP-Congress political contest and assess the candidates and issues independently.
He alleged that the political narrative was being presented as a two-party contest while AAP’s candidates and activities were not receiving similar attention. He claimed that despite these challenges, the party continues to receive support from sections of the public.
AAP has maintained that it entered the Gandhinagar civic election campaign with organisational strength and has sought support for candidates who it says have remained connected with local public issues.
Dr. Karan Barot said voters should consider whether ordinary citizens and local representatives are getting adequate opportunities to enter politics and lead their communities. He thanked AAP supporters and urged the people of Gandhinagar to make their decision after carefully examining the political developments surrounding the civic election.
