Delhi, December 22, 2025: The Delhi government is considering raising the annual income limit for Economically Weaker Section (EWS) patients eligible for free treatment in private hospitals. Currently set at ₹2.25 lakh, the proposed limit could be increased to ₹5 lakh, potentially benefitting thousands of additional patients. The Delhi High Court has sought a status report on the matter, with the next hearing scheduled for January 7, 2026.
Delhi government Submits Proposal in Delhi High Court

High Court Requests Status Report
The Delhi High Court has instructed the government to submit a copy of the final decision on record. During the next hearing on January 7, 2026, the government will present a detailed status report regarding the updated income limit for EWS patients.
Existing Infrastructure to Support More Patients
Senior lawyer Ashok Agrawal, appearing as amicus curiae for the Dr. S.K. Sareen Committee, informed the court that 62 private hospitals in Delhi currently reserve over 1,000 beds for EWS patients. These hospitals provide free treatment to eligible patients from across the country. If the income limit is increased, a larger number of low- and middle-income patients will gain access to free medical care in these hospitals.
Impact on EWS Patients
The proposed increase in the income limit aims to extend healthcare access to a broader population, ensuring that more individuals from economically weaker backgrounds can receive timely treatment in private hospitals. Healthcare experts believe this step will significantly enhance social welfare and reduce the financial burden on needy families.
