Union Minister Gajendra Singh Shekhawat to inaugurate Surajkund Mela today, with CM Nayab Singh Saini also set to participate in the event.
The 38th Surajkund International Crafts Fair, scheduled from February 7 to 23 in Surajkund, Haryana, kicks off today. Union Tourism and Culture Minister Gajendra Singh Shekhawat will inaugurate the fair on February 7 at 10 AM, with Haryana Chief Minister Nayab Singh Saini and Tourism and Heritage Minister Dr. Arvind Sharma also in attendance.
Principal Secretary of Haryana Tourism Corporation and Vice-Chairperson of the Surajkund Mela Authority, Kala Ramachandran, stated that the 38th edition of the fair will make history with renewed energy and enthusiasm. She highlighted that this year’s event will witness record participation at both national and international levels.
Speaking to the media at Surajkund Mela Ground in Faridabad, Ramachandran emphasized that the Surajkund International Crafts Mela has become the world’s largest handicraft fair, dedicated to preserving India’s rich artistic heritage and fostering global cultural exchange. Since its inception in 1987, the fair has played a crucial role in empowering artisans by providing them with a direct marketplace, aligning with the Government of India’s “Vocal for Local” and “Atmanirbhar Bharat” initiatives. She further noted that the fair serves as a launchpad for small and medium entrepreneurs (SMEs), particularly women entrepreneurs, helping them expand their businesses and strengthen the rural economy.
Odisha and Madhya Pradesh have been chosen as the theme states for this year’s Surajkund International Crafts Fair, showcasing their distinctive art, crafts, heritage, and cuisine. Their participation will bring a vibrant display of folk dances, traditional arts, and cultural experiences to the event.
Principal Secretary Kala Ramachandran highlighted that international participation in this edition will be unprecedented, with 648 participants from 42 countries, including Egypt, Ethiopia, Syria, Afghanistan, Belarus, Myanmar, and BIMSTEC (Bay of Bengal Initiative for Multi-Sectoral Technical and Economic Cooperation) member nations. BIMSTEC is also the fair’s partner organization, promoting regional cooperation and traditional crafts.
The North Eastern Handicrafts and Handloom Development Corporation (NEHHDC) will serve as the cultural partner, presenting the rich craft, textile, and culinary traditions of the northeastern states. Meanwhile, Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) has been designated as the official partner for ticketing and parking, allowing visitors to book tickets online through the DMRC website and the Surajkund Mela portal, with offline ticket options available at Delhi Metro stations.
