The Indian film industry is mourning the loss of one of its most iconic figures, Manoj Kumar, who passed away on Friday morning at the age of 87. Affectionately called “Bharat Kumar” for his iconic patriotic roles, Kumar leaves behind a profound legacy in Indian cinema that shaped the portrayal of nationalism on the silver screen.
A Cinematic Legacy of Patriotism
Manoj Kumar’s contribution to Indian cinema went far beyond his performances. His portrayals of selfless farmers, freedom fighters, and idealistic Indians in films like Shaheed (1965), Upkar (1967), and Purab Aur Paschim (1970) earned him a special place in the hearts of millions. His films not only entertained but also ignited a sense of national pride, reflecting the values and spirit of India.
Veteran actor Prem Chopra, who worked alongside Kumar in several films, expressed his admiration and sorrow. Speaking to the media outside Kumar’s residence, Chopra recalled the profound impact Kumar’s films had on the country. Prem Chopra remarked that Manoj Kumar deserved to be awarded the Bharat Ratna. He went on to say that each of Kumar’s films conveyed a powerful message that celebrated and glorified India.

Beyond his acting, Manoj Kumar was also a visionary director. Prem Chopra, who knew him well, praised his creative brilliance. Prem Chopra said that Manoj Kumar was not only a wonderful actor, but he was also a visionary director. “What he stood for was bigger than just stardom” Chopra added. He further praised Kumar’s films, saying they make you feel something deep in your heart.
Kumar’s ability to craft films that resonated with patriotism and national pride elevated him from a mere actor to a symbol of an era in Indian cinema. His films sparked a wave of pride among audiences and showcased his deep love for his country.
Manoj Kumar’s death, caused by cardiogenic shock following a heart attack and complications from liver cirrhosis, has left fans devastated across generations. Despite his declining health, his family had hoped for his recovery, with his son Kunal Goswami confirming that Kumar had been unwell for some time.
“The complications took their toll,” Kunal shared, as he remembered his father’s strength and resilience. “He was a fighter, always strong-willed.”
A steady stream of actors, admirers, and close friends gathered outside his Mumbai residence to pay their last respects. The final rites will be held on Saturday at 11 a.m. at the Pawan Hans crematorium, located near Nanavati Hospital in Vile Parle.
