The political debate over the deaths of three Indian seafarers in the Gulf of Oman intensified on Wednesday after Aam Aadmi Party national convener Arvind Kejriwal sharply criticized Prime Minister Narendra Modi and urged him to raise the issue strongly during his proposed meeting with US President Donald Trump in France.
The controversy stems from a recent incident involving the oil tanker Settebello, where three Indian crew members lost their lives following a US military strike during operations linked to enforcement actions in the Gulf of Oman region. The vessel reportedly carried 24 Indian seafarers among its crew, with several others rescued.
Reacting to the development, Arvind Kejriwal demanded that the Prime Minister directly convey India’s “strong protest and anger” to the US leadership. He argued that silence or limited diplomatic response would weaken India’s global standing and fail to address the concerns of affected families.

Officials have stated that the National Testing Agency-like maritime security framework and diplomatic channels are actively engaged with the situation, while India has already lodged formal objections over the incident and sought accountability.
At the G7 outreach discussions, Prime Minister Modi had earlier highlighted the broader risks facing global maritime trade, especially in conflict-prone regions such as the Strait of Hormuz. He emphasized the need for international cooperation to ensure the safety of seafarers and uninterrupted trade routes
The Indian government has maintained that it is closely monitoring the evolving situation and prioritizing the safety of its citizens abroad. Diplomatic talks between India and the United States are expected to include discussions on West Asia tensions, energy security, and broader strategic cooperation during the ongoing summit engagements.
The incident has also reignited debates in India over maritime security, global trade routes, and the protection of Indian seafarers working in high-risk international waters.
