Arvind Kejriwal criticises Telegram ban ahead of NEET-UG re-test, calling it ineffective in tackling paper leaks and questioning government strategy.
The political debate over exam security intensified on Wednesday as Aam Aadmi Party national convener Arvind Kejriwal strongly criticised the Centre’s decision to temporarily restrict access to the Telegram messaging platform ahead of the NEET-UG 2026 re-test.
The National Testing Agency (NTA) has announced that Telegram will remain blocked until June 22 as part of precautionary measures aimed at ensuring fair conduct of the NEET-UG re-examination scheduled for June 21. Officials said the step is intended to prevent cheating networks and curb the spread of misinformation during the examination period.
According to NTA Director General Abhishek Singh, the temporary restriction is part of a wider security framework designed to ensure transparency and prevent malpractice in the examination process.
However, Arvind Kejriwal dismissed the move as ineffective, stating that such measures do not address the root cause of repeated examination paper leaks in the country. Taking to social media platform X, he questioned the logic behind blocking an app, arguing that it would not stop future leaks.

He further alleged that the government lacks the political will to take strong action against paper leak networks, which he described as a well-organised and financially driven system. He claimed that instead of targeting the root ecosystem, authorities are relying on surface-level restrictions.
Arvind Kejriwal also pointed to what he called unusual security arrangements in recent examinations, including the transportation of question papers under heavy protection, saying these steps highlight the seriousness of the issue but not its solution.
As part of the same security measures, the government has reportedly instructed major tech companies, including Google and Apple, to restrict Telegram’s availability on their platforms until June 22.
The controversy follows the cancellation of the NEET-UG exam held on May 3, which was scrapped on May 12 after allegations of irregularities and paper leaks surfaced. The decision impacted lakhs of aspirants across India, triggering widespread protests and renewed demands for a transparent and foolproof examination system.
